Steve Huston

United States

Biography

Steve Huston was born in Alaska in 1959. He studied at Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design (1979-82) and began illustrating during his fourth semester to pay his way through. His client list grew to included such names as Caesar’s Palace, MGM, Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios.

After nearly a decade of doing commercial work, Huston decided a change was in order. As part of his plan to launch a fine art career, he began teaching drawing, painting, and composition first at his Alma Mater, then at the Disney, Warner Brother, and Dreamworks Studios. He helped those great stables of talent (and many other) to hone their figurative skills for such projects as Lion King, Iron Giant, and Shrek. In off hours, Disney generously offered him access to their vast library. And this, along with his deep love of the old masters, allowed him to develop his ideas of teaching and picture-making where every mark on the canvas, just like every act in life, has deep meaning. In this sense, the artist is not just a dedicated craftsman, but a visual philosopher that has something vital to offer this world.

In 2013, despite an often times losing battle with his smart phone, Steve agreed to join an online start-up that aspired to provide low cost, high quality art instruction digitally to artists who otherwise might never have access. To date, Newmastersacademy.org and Artmentors.com provide hundreds of hours of video lectures and courses, many of them Huston’s, for thousands of professional and aspiring artists on all seven continents.

He published his long awaited how-to book in the summer of 2016. Figure Drawing For Artists: Making Every Mark Count was an Amazon bestseller for quite some time, and is available in three languages and counting.

His current projects include a multi-year commission series of several eight by ten foot paintings, one of which has over 60 figures in it, and an epic fantasy novel (“love letter”) written and illustrated for his four children (and for whoever else might be interested). The young adult novel follows the hero from orphan to warrior to leader, and finally to healer. Steve hopes it might speak to how each of us must grow in both wisdom and connection to community as we grow in power. Huston continues to exhibit and lecture around the world.
