Had lots of fun at these late stages of the process, working with brushtrokes and careful edge control. Finally deepened the colors of the background to enhance the feeling of a closed, private space. The warm light coming from the top brings an atmosphere of hope.

  • 3D Model Background and Final Sketches

<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>My idea is set and I can start working on my illustration.</p> <p> </p> <blockquote> <p>My Personal Oasis is me taking a photo of my memories in my University Room. </p> </blockquote> <p> </p> <p>First I wanted to take care of the background, in other words, the room. I have many photos of it, filled and empty, in many angles too, however, my mind can't picture it in the angle I want. So, I used one of my many skills and 3D modeled the room.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBM0Q3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--c55ebbc2a0e6da78058339493aaace1b2bb90a5c/THUGoldenWIP_3.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBM0Q3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--c55ebbc2a0e6da78058339493aaace1b2bb90a5c/THUGoldenWIP_3.png"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>In case you wonder, everything was modeled by me. The 3D model room and props didn't need to be perfect, they just needed to help me figure out the best angle for my fish eye view. I tried to correct the overlapping faces that appeared in the render, but some of them escaped.</p> <p> </p> <p>I pick the render from the top, centered top view. It allowed me to draw all the memories without having them overlap so much, like I studied in my thumbnails.</p> <p> </p> <p>Now, I can work over the render and get a clean lined background.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBM0g3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--cbbeeb760f6a93e1ff77ba995e3a26e6e42abdde/THUGoldenWIP_4.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBM0g3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--cbbeeb760f6a93e1ff77ba995e3a26e6e42abdde/THUGoldenWIP_4.png"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>Despite enjoying the idea of polaroid frames, I wasn't liking the way they looked on the drawing - they covered too much area and the composition didn't look balanced.</p> <p> </p> <p>I tried fixing the frames, but the memories wouldn't align with them. So, I got rid of them and decided to draw everything. Once I was satisfied, I started lining the drawing.</p> <p> </p> </div>

  • The chosen image

<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>Having solved a solid workflow, this image progressed faster than the last. I knew I wanted it to be a better reflection of myself, and what I enjoyed, therefor, I was more straight foward with it's design, I chose a cool dome design from one of the initial thumbnails, and quickly started modeling everything in Blender. The framing and lighting was inspired by some TLOU2 images while flipping trough the art book, seeing how the use of shadows on the foreground helped guide the viewers atenttion towards the subject. I wanted to try and have a easly readable image, where the viewer could then start perusing and exploring littler corners and details.</p> <p> </p> <p>This process was a back and forth between 3D and 2D, where I would model something, start painting on top of it, go back to 3D and make adjustments or additions, and sometimes even removals. I also took the opportunity to use my 3D base and render out some shadow layers, masks and other helpful time saving renders.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBeWo3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--fa440ac94ba4301fdaf051f6a74019adfd9937d1/golden%20ticket%2024%20details.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBeWo3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--fa440ac94ba4301fdaf051f6a74019adfd9937d1/golden%20ticket%2024%20details.png"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>Image 1 - Flat Render</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBeWY3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--91ff023f51b9a4d42b2c462c9ef234de8b647703/golden%20ticket%2024%20mask%201.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBeWY3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--91ff023f51b9a4d42b2c462c9ef234de8b647703/golden%20ticket%2024%20mask%201.png"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>Image 2 - Mask Render</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBeXI3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--565e6d17d2b267f7b9562d78be2dc70d62b1dae4/Screenshot%202024-07-26%20162847.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBeXI3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--565e6d17d2b267f7b9562d78be2dc70d62b1dae4/Screenshot%202024-07-26%20162847.png"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>Image 3 - Shadow pass</p> <p> </p> <p>With this I started focusing more and more in over painting, dividing every thing by layers, and slowly building up cohesion and details.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBeXo3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--60bb06edfef34d1695ad4715b777d9b25619774e/painting%20process.jpg"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBeXo3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--60bb06edfef34d1695ad4715b777d9b25619774e/painting%20process.jpg"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>As seen above, I began by blocking out a rough light map on top of the 3D render, moved onto photobashing, and then to painting. A lot of the photobashing wasn't used in the end, but it can still be felt in certain places. Most of the image was done by painting, progressing from a greyscale image to a coloured one. Eventually I used a more robust 3D scene to render out a shadow pass, and use it as a basis for the lighting. It was then a process of painting in layers, merging, painting and sketching, merging, and then a light post process phase.</p> <p> </p> <p>Once finished the final image will be posted on the submissions page. Hope these process post were useful, and clear. See you all on the final submissions page.</p> <p> </p> </div>

  • Developing an Idea

<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>Last post I talked a bit about the concepting of two ideas. After having a somewhat solid idea of what to draw I got down to designing each image.</p> <p> </p> <p>Starting with the Self Sustained Community Concept.</p> <p> </p> <p>Knowing how I wanted the house's silluette to loosely look like, I drew multiple variations of it. I wanted to try and better combine the lower house to the tent celling.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBd0g3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--6e2942fc9d6d5975c41d4f01cd93e14cfda607d3/house%20design%201.jpg"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBd0g3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--6e2942fc9d6d5975c41d4f01cd93e14cfda607d3/house%20design%201.jpg"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>Some of these designs worked but didn't carry the vibe I wanted, some where to sci-fi, one took inspiration from a tree trunk (it didn't really turn out I though it would). My last design, however, took the original idea and just expanded on top of it clearing out some less defined traits. I really enjoyed certain design elements, such as the wide door, the water catcher hole on the left tent and the arching architecture.</p> <p> </p> <p>Seeing how I didn't want the hassel of drawing perspective guides, I wanted to use 3D for everything hard surface, and then paint over it in Clip Studio. I planned out what elements would show up, and then proceeded to sketch them out before modelling them.</p> <p> </p> <p>I designed fences, hydroponics and a few farm bots that would be scattered troughout the background.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBd2Y3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--faa561ce094b840556591b9f407d60bc6e0958f4/house%20design%202.jpg"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBd2Y3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--faa561ce094b840556591b9f407d60bc6e0958f4/house%20design%202.jpg"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>I sent these to Blender and model out a simple scene, trying multiple angles and ideas, settling on this one:</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBdzc3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--b6b55fb00deb72af149f46efc84a6c92a1023b2b/untitled.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBdzc3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--b6b55fb00deb72af149f46efc84a6c92a1023b2b/untitled.png"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>And then doing a quick paint over before moving on to the other idea.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBdy83QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--199b965ad6d34d6b20f9115b63cc9bb4cd1b2d3b/Community%20Process%201.jpg"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBdy83QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--199b965ad6d34d6b20f9115b63cc9bb4cd1b2d3b/Community%20Process%201.jpg"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>Next post will be about the initial process of the what was to become the final image.</p> <p> </p> </div>

  • Traditional watercolor painting

The illustration is made in watercolor. working traditionally is a way to step into my oasis. I like working Traditionallly because it’s tangible, made by a human and gives authenticity. Allot of art nowadays is made with computers, we lose some of the imperfections of the material and artist. It is precisely by working traditionally that you can feel more of the humanity in the work.

  • Reflections

Self Reflection, wanted to portray the sketches to be rather sketchy, some of them being clean silhouettes and some being wobbly figures that barely make sense.

  • 3D blockout

After tinkering quite a bit with composition and lights, I imported my 3D blockout into Photoshop. I didn't use any fancy tools, rendering passes nor compositing, it was just plaing overpainting on a single layer. This didn't make things all that easy but having a base to colour pick from and the clown ID pass sped everything up quite a bit.

At this stage I started having troubles with my computer as I realised a little too late that it was showing me very bright blacks compared to my phone - as a result, the render looks quite dark from most devices (except from my monitor, apparently).

Many correction layers later I started painting all of my characters and creatures on the scene.

  • Rock/Tree Material

<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>For the Rocks and Trees I wanted a material that could adapt to the environment and the color of the landscape. Using RVTs (Runtime Virtual Textures) for color and height, Unreal Engine can define where and wich color will be used in that object. The good part of using a material like this is that we can move the objects around the landscape and the object colors adapt to the landscape. This type of material also helps the integration of the object in the scenery, which is why i decide to go with this type of workflow and not just simply texturing the objects alone.</p> <p> </p> <p>I made the two materials using the same base material with a lot of parameters that i could tweak and change. With this commands i can control how much the material affects the object.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBNDc2QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--44019def9b37399e4d637c13353edcf8c3def2da/Wip6_2.psd.jpg"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBNDc2QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--44019def9b37399e4d637c13353edcf8c3def2da/Wip6_2.psd.jpg"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>This allows me to create smoother transitions of colors and helps giving personality to the objects, as well as making them more unique, i can use diferent effects on different trees, which will make them fell different even though they are the same.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBNmY3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--a35519bd9c942d72a4496f90649885880d009c7a/Wip6_4.jpg"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBNmY3QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--a35519bd9c942d72a4496f90649885880d009c7a/Wip6_4.jpg"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> </div>

  • Almost There

I painted my dream robot companion. It is powered by a combination of water and solar energy. It uses these two sources to bring the sketches to life by diffusing water and reflecting light through its fins, similar to how holograms work.

Refined the Spirits and included some sketches to enhance the idea of sketches taking flight.
