WEEK 09 - FINAL WORKS
The most stressful week of our entire STL adventure. We felt like it was the beginning when we were just days away from turning in a teaser and a video pitch. We had been working in synergy, pulling all-nighters. With only a few hours to go before the final prototype was due, we were still improving some of the sequences and at the same time we were worried about not sending our file in on time (which could cost us a disqualification, we thought about that really). We wanted to keep our promise to deliver a teaser + a pitch and we managed to do it. We found an alternative way to transition from live action to 3D to 2D and we were proud to have a prototype.
We were lucky to have Scot in the last week to finish the sound part of our teaser and everything went well. It was really magical !!!!!

Closing Thoughts
Our journey with Sony Talent League has come to a close (at least, until we meet again in Spain!), and we’d like to take this moment to share our reflections on this experience. Before we get into it, we’d first like to extend our congratulations to Team Djossi for their well-deserved victory, as well as to the other finalists. All of you have inspired and motivated us throughout this journey with your talent and hard work. We look forward to being continuously inspired by you and we can’t wait to meet you in Barcelona.

It’s hard to encapsulate this ten week experience into one succinct post. The journey consisted of a lot of trial and error and moments where the feeling of anxiety persisted, but there was also a lot of learning, a lot of growth, and a lot of friendship.

Interestingly, I first learned about Sony Talent League a year ago. At the time, I had never thought about applying because it was outside of my comfort zone. Flash forward to a year later, and I had just returned home after working abroad at a VFX studio in Montreal. I wasn’t sure what was next for me, but I recall a conversation I had with the lady sitting next to me on the plane ride home. She’s retired now, but her career had many twists and turns, and she advised me to be excited rather than anxious about what was to come. With that mindset, I wanted to be open to new opportunities and I wanted to learn as much as possible. Seeing Sony Talent League pop up in my emails felt like a sign, and I remember calling Ephan and saying, “Hey, would it be crazy if we applied for this?”

We began our journey with Sony Talent League with open minds, ready to absorb as much knowledge as we could about games and the games industry, and we hoped to use that knowledge in order to better ourselves as artists and as people. Our game, as many of you know, was inspired by my parents and my desire to connect with them on a deeper level. Throughout the mentorship, we wanted to create a game that would best deliver this experience, not just for me and my parents, but to other people who also struggle with language barriers. I believe the most challenging part of our journey was figuring out the game mechanics which went through many, many rounds of changes and iterations. Looking back, if we were to do things differently, I think we would spend a good amount of time in the beginning discussing our games’ core values, drafting the game design document, and essentially, just building a solid foundation for our game. I’d also say taking more time in the UX aspect of the game would have been beneficial, for instance doing more UX research and figuring out the user (gameplay) experience in more detail from the get-go.

Our mentors were fantastic and we’re so, so thankful for them. They gave us advice, guided us, were patient with us, and reassured us. Andrew, Kevin, Sonja, Harvey, and Daryl–thank you all so much for your time and the guidance you’ve given us. We’re so appreciative of you all, and we look up to you all so much. We hope that one day our paths will cross again!

Sony Talent League was an unforgettable experience and it has been amazing to be a part of such a supportive and welcoming community. We wanted to create an experience that will help bring people together in a fun way. It’s what Don Don represents, and I think our game managed to capture that pretty well. Towards the end of this project, my parents entered retirement, and a part of their time will now be spent playing Don Don haha. I also want to say how proud I am of Ephan. His commitment and dedication to our game is something I’ll never forget. Though he’s not a programmer, he developed our game and it looks pretty darn good if I say so myself! It’s time to sign off now, but it’s not a goodbye, but a “see you later”. We look forward to seeing everyone in Barcelona. Until next time!

P.S.: The game’s name “Don Don” is my Chinese nickname. It’s what my Dad calls me. My Chinese name is 安安 (translates to peace) and is pronounced “On On” similar to how “On” or “We” is pronounced in French, as in “On y va!” So, on that note, I’d like to close this post with:

Just a week or two before we submitted our project to Sony Talent League we would've never expected to be working almost full time on an animated VR project with a new technology we've never handled before. <div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>Well, here we are. This is our very last recap being part of this Sony Talent League, and that means thinking (and writing) about this journey. And what a journey! A lot of learning, working, and, above all, joy. We've enjoyed this so much that there is nothing but gratitude for being part of this, for meeting all of you: Kris, Rafi, Scot, Maureen, Andrew, but also Maria, Rute, Ana, Susana and all the team of THU, the Tribe Advisors and, of course, the other teams.</p> <p> </p> <p>If we look back to the beginning of the program, our project has changed a lot, but it doesn't mean that it's a whole different project. In fact, I think that now it's more our story than before, it's more focused and has stronger foundations. It's what we wanted to tell but we didn't know how to tell it. And we are very proud of what we've achieved. Nevertheless, this is a starting point, just one more step in the bigger journey of actually making this film, and we are very motivated to keep going and see what happens in the future. It's a long journey, but we are enjoying the ride.</p> <p> </p> <p>In this program we've learnt a lot of things and from very different sources. We've learnt from the process, from the mentors, from other projects and people involved... We've learnt how to comunicate our ideas to others, a lot of how to tell (and sell) a story, how music and sound has so much to say and how important it is to spend time and effort in caring about it, we've learnt about time management and prototyping, about focusing on what you're better at and involving people to make their best... All that learning is priceless for us, so thank you.</p> <p> </p> <p>Now it's time for us to think about the future of the project. As you may know, we want to look for investors and more people to get aboard of our garden of monsters to help us to grow the project. We need to make contacts, look for spots to pitch the project and find the right people. All help is welcome, so if you have any suggestions, we're here and open to any opportunity of making this possible. And at the same time, we have to continue developing the characters, story and universe, both graphically and through writing, keep going (thank you Kris). We are really motivated and we believe in our project even more than the first day.</p> <p> </p> <p>We won't say goodbye, because we really want this to be a see you soon. Week Ten: The Journey Has Just Begun
<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>As we head out of our final week of mentorship with Sony Talent League, I am reflecting on what I have learned and what comes next. </p> <p> </p> <p>But first, I am thrilled for the Djossi Heroes team and am in awe of the talent of all finalists. I have to pinch myself to believe I am alongside them. </p> <p> </p> <p>I am incredibly grateful to have met and learned from the mentors, finalists, and THU team. I will stay in touch with mentors as I take my next step in this exciting journey. I will be improving my pitch deck with more artwork with new artists and discovering the makings of a script. </p> <p> </p> <p>Here is a recap of what I have learned:</p> <p> </p> <ol> <li>A personal connection to the story is part of every step.</li> <li>Think like a leader, student, and collaborator.</li> <li>Use fashion, music, and real life to build characters. </li> <li>Give each character a purpose.</li> <li>Get the opinions of kids. </li> <li>Just be yourself.</li> </ol> <p> </p> <p>A final takeaway from Sony Talent League is that I have found a place where I belong. This is a picture of me when I was 10 years old; I frequently made a stage out of kitchen chairs to tell stories or perform to a crowd of stuffed animals. Final last steps

Week Nine - Thank You For Being A Part Of Our Journey!
We’re back again for another rundown of our weekly progress. It’s really ramping up in the dev room right now and we’re excited to share our progress with you.

We had a number of final mentor sessions with some of our mentors so we were eager to get as much info and feedback out of them as possible. With Harvey, we spoke to him about our feedback system and how we can make that more interesting as well as how to make sure the mechanics are repeatable as well as fun. With Daryl, we talked about the UI elements in the game and how we can make the next required action really clear for the user. With Andrew, we discussed the presentation and how we can express the lighthearted/fun tone of the game effectively. We spoke to all of our mentors about the different concepts for our logo and player selection screens. We are drawn to the idea of using speech bubbles for the design but will try to find a way to make it look less like a messaging application.

We have been continuing with the development in Unity. Focusing on small interactions in a variety of levels that will be shown in the demo. We have updated the UI elements to show more personality and fun and have changed the font to showcase this too. We have also been adding more to our feedback system by adding sparkle particle effects and sounds when you input an acceptable word.

We have also been creating builds for the WebGL format so that we can easily share our project and have people test our game. It’s been fascinating seeing our game on different devices and it is a very proud feeling to see someone playing with a game we’ve made.

This week, we're going to focus on the presentation and make some minor improvements to our game. We’ll have one more mentor session which will be with Kevin. I can’t believe we’re already heading into the final week! We want to do our best and finish strong. Thank you to all of our mentors and advisors who helped us get this far. Week Nine: The Secret Sauce

These kind words from Sally helped me solidify my perspective: I want to create a show where kids feel seen and heard and believe they are capable of incredible things. And suddenly everything, absolutely everything, was there.
<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>Hi everyone! Adrián here, in our last weekly recap. This one is going to be short, I think. We are on track, we have to deliver it all on friday and this last week (and the one that begins today) is being focused on finishing stuff. So let's go with our last recap!</p> <p> </p> <p>As I've said, this week has been almost everything about finishing the stuff and planning how to proceed with our materials. Pablo and I have been painting some artwork, but I've moved slower because a pain in my wrist and elbow. Don't worry, I went to my physiotherapist and it's almost solved, it wasn't serious. Also, I had to give a masterclass at the college of Fine Arts, which was a really nice experience but also interesting because it was the perfect place to test our pitch. After that, I've spent the weekend collecting the feedback from our mentors and adding some notes about what I experienced at the masterclass with an objective in mind: to reestructure some parts of the pitch in order to have the best possible version for the final delivery. I'm still on it, but it looks good I think.</p> <p> </p> <p>At the same time, we have been working with a sound designer to put sound to the sizzle reel. I saw a preview yesterday and had a meeting to give him directions and notes about it. We are very short of time, because we wanted to use every single meeting with our mentors to have the best video possible, so now we are a bit in a rush with the sound, but we expect to have a version with every sound for tomorrow or Wednesday, so we can make the last few adjustments right on time.</p> <p> </p> <p>And last, but not least, here is the artwork we have been doing this week. Most of it is by Pablo, I hope to finish my part right on time now that I can draw without any pain. WEEK 08 - ENVIRONNEMENT 3D IN 2D ANIMATION
Week 8 was rather busy for the 2D animation of the jossi hero project ... Nandy had to finish all the sketches of the animated sequences so that our teaser could be delivered on time. With the work on the side it was hot, but after a few sleepless nights he was able to advance. It allowed us to test the integration of a 3D set in one of the shots and it looks pretty good. The last meeting with Jinko was a great help. It allowed us to better manage the rhythm of the animation... Editing is going well, with the mentors we will choose the sequences to keep for the teaser and the structure of the video.

Choosing Priorities
<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>Week 8 turned out to be a point where we slowly started to see the end for project Signal getting closer. A point that made us proud when looking back at what we hade acchieved so far, but also a point that made us realize that there is not much time left until we will deliver the final pitch video. <br> Both of us had been in situations like these before and both of us know the feeling of seeing a dateline coming closer and closer, but it is always a chellange to manage to transform those feelings into a push that will make you work even more efficient, while being under pressure. And with that comes a row of decisions you might have to take and duties that you have to rank in low or high priorites. </p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"> <p>One thing, that we decided to put focus on was being in touch with the ASL comunity. The week before we had reached out to a number of people who can sign ASL to get help on the translation of our dialogue list and to get feedback from them on the project. We have received a couple of messages and got very interesting thoughts on the project. We found out that most people we reached out to liked it and found it very important that we chose to work with the topic of deafness, however we also got some feedback that highlighted the importance of respect that we have to work with. </p> <br><p> </p> <br><p> Initially we had a hard time finding someone who had time to help us with the translations, but luckily our Mentor Kara offered us to get in touch with her parents since her father grew up as a CODA as well and was able to sign ASL. That was not only really releaving but it was also super nice to meet them through a video call and hear their excitement for the project. We received a first draft for the music from the composer we are working with and gave him some feedback to work with. We started to create an animatic with placeholder footage so we can already get a sense of timing and pacing that we want for the final video and we began to write a script for the interview / voice over the video will have. Week Eight - The Final Stretch
We’re now on the home stretch! Team Don Don has been hard at work and we’re prepared to finish strong.

We had amazing sessions this week with Sonja, Andrew, Kara, and Kevin and we learned so much from each of them! In our session with Sonja, we talked about our visuals and simplifying them–which we’ll apply as we create our new levels (Which we’ll explain later in this diary!) With Andrew, we talked about our game mechanics. As mentioned in the previous diary, we were initially going to build a bridge level with the primary mechanic being dragging or tapping phrases. Andrew suggested incorporating more of that drag and drop object goodness, which is what we’re planning on doing now! We also had a meeting with Kara where we went over our project timeline, and we’re still on track to finish on time–whew! And in our final session of week 8, we had a great chat with Kevin and talked about our game’s core pillars, as well as something that I feel really stuck with us–creating the 20% to showcase the 80% (hope I remembered that correctly). But that catalyzed us into rethinking things, and with the combination of Andrew’s advice, I thought: let’s build a bunch of different levels, but not to their entirety. Let’s just build the parts that we’ll need to showcase in our video pitch, so we’ll have snippets of each level to show a better representation of what our game looks like!

So, yup! We’ve adjusted our schedule to accommodate this, but I really do feel like it will help us explain our vision better! And, we are on track to finish on time, which is great.

As a little reflection moment, Ephan and I have learned sooooo much so far! In the process of making a game, we learned a lot about design, mechanics, feedback systems, sound, project management, the list goes on! Earlier in the mentorship sessions, we were asked what kind of inspirations we had for our game, and we said that we really liked and wanted to have the story inspired by the film, “Everything, Everywhere All at Once.” Funnily enough, our game didn’t end up being like the movie, however the process sure felt like everything, everywhere, all at once! (Apologies, Ephan and I both enjoy bad puns, and dad jokes). This project has just made me have even more respect for people who work in the games industry.

So, what have we been working on and what will we be focusing on for this upcoming week? We’ve finished writing the first draft of our video pitch’s script and will finalize the script, record, and start editing the video this week. We have also been building those levels for our video pitch, and are planning on finishing those this week. As we mentioned earlier, we really want to showcase our game so we’ll be showing different types of things you can drag and drop, such as words to restore an object, phrases, or actions like hugging a NPC to calm them down. We’re also planning on incorporating a little tutorial walkthrough in our video to explain the mechanics and how the game works. All in all, we can’t believe it’s our final week of mentorships this week and we’re ready to finish strong!! LET’S GO DON DON!!

The end is nigh
<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>Hi there! How's it going for everyone? Adrián here with the weekly recap. Not so much to say about this last week, to be honest. We're on track, finishing, polishing, adding colour to some stuff... You know, making everything prettier, haha. So let's go with it!</p> <p> </p> <p>So this week has been focus on two different things: finishing some artwork and finishing the blocking of the sizzle reel. Let's go with the reel first, so we can finish with some beautiful artwork. Basically, the work for this last wee has been polishing the sizzle reel editing, so we have a blocking and it's a matter of substitute some frames for the more finished ones, but also because we've been talking with a sound designer to put some sound to it and that makes things quite easier for him. We expect to have a version with sound by the end of the weekend, so we have a little time to make adjustments, mix everything and make the final video. We are very excited to be able to show you all the final result!</p> <p> </p> <p>I also worked on improving the text of the reel a little bit to make it more interesting and catchy, as well as clarifying and enhancing some key moments. Just little changes, but the sizzle has improved a lot, I think. And after that, I've recorded the voiceover. We wanted to hire a voice actor or actress, but due to the lack of time, I finally did it by myself. We want to hire a professional after the program, but, for now it'll do.</p> <p> </p> <p>And now, here it comes what you were really expecting: the artwork! So this week has been a lot of colour work. First, some of the characters needed some adjustments, so here they are. WEEK 07 - EDITING
We started and finalized the editing and shared with the mentors. The feedback was very encouraging, informative and constructive. The mentors were again very helpful as always. Vani helped us to structure the teaser script better by excluding all the superfluous... Scot loved the music we came up with, as did the other mentors. He also gave us advice and his opinion of observer on the ideal length that our introduction should have, it was really great.

Nanan Jinko asked that we see more of Salimata's face in the animatic during our last meeting with her. Nandy has been taking notes and refining his drawings, currently it is at the stage of finalizing the inks. We had to give feedback to Sonja to validate the texture and realism of the bowl. We also received several technical advices from Eugenie about tracking and exporting the camera for the fx inlay. We are currently putting these instructions into practice and hope to have the expected result.

Piece by piece, the puzzle is taking shape 😊

WEEK 06 - STARTING EDITING
Beginning of the editing. We started the derushage and then we focused on the interview of our characters. We extracted the interview and kept all the things that Salimata said and subtitled the video in English. The goal was to identify the good interventions and we went through our mentors who each made improvements. With Scot it was essentially the sound, the voice, he reassured us that our sound was not bad.
Now we had to tackle the next week with the supporting music and the placement of the b-roll. The week went by quickly, the closer we got the more difficult it became and the more decisive the advice of the mentors became.

Handle a Variety of Tasks

First of all, we kept going with the animation of the old man. The internet is full of easy English to ASL translations, but when it comes to translating a longer sentence or some more advances ways of saying things the online data base reaches its limits. That’s why we started to reach out to YouTube / instagram / social media channels that use or teach ASL. We gave them a brief introduction to the project and asked them for their help to translate and collaborate with us.<br> <br> We also got in touch with a music composer, who really likes the project and confirmed he is on board. Week Seven - Let's Keep it Up!
Hello! Team Don Don here. Now that we’re heading into week 8, let’s do a recap of week 7!

Mentor Sessions:

During our mentor sessions this week, we received valuable feedback. With Daryl, we explored important aspects of our game, including its style, UI/readability, and camera angle. We also discussed potential publishers and investors for our project. In our session with Harvey, we discussed the feedback system–since the primary mechanic of our game is the drag and drop/tap mechanic, we want to ensure that we perfect its game feel/juice.

Story:

We also really honed in on our story, the characters, and the overall plot. So the story follows Anna, and her journey to recovering her lost memories and finding her way back home. Along the way, players will learn key phrases about human connection from the characters they meet. When Anna returns home, she must confront her past and the people she left behind using the phrases she’s learned throughout her journey.

Building the Demo:

We chose a middle level as our demo since we felt that it was a good representation of our game as a whole. For context, in the previous level, Anna (the protagonist) and Ken (her guide) have gotten into an argument. This level begins with them standing at opposite ends of a bridge with missing planks in the middle. The objective is to restore the planks by selecting the correct phrases as well as restoring objects. Once the bridge has been restored, they have also bridged their reconnection. Below the bridge lies a river, and to help drive the level’s progression, we’re thinking of incorporating fog that will slowly lift as players choose the correct answers, eventually revealing the characters’ reflections at the end, adding to the symbolism of the game.

Mechanics:

Our game mechanics include a drag and drop object restoration system that will reveal clues about Anna's past. We're also thinking of ways to integrate teaching phrases into the gameplay, and while we're currently considering having players tap the correct phrase in response to Ken or other characters’ dialogue, we're still exploring other options to improve this idea. We've also been working on the feedback system for the drag and drop/tap mechanic. We’ve implemented/are going to implement a subtle screen shake, sound effects and character animations for correct/incorrect answers, and light sparkles when an answer is correct.

Next Steps:

This week, we’ll continue building our level demo in Unity, which will include working on the feedback system, character animations, and sound effects. We’ll also finalize the script for the level and make artistic changes from our current prototype to a more polished look for the demo. This week was a great week for us as we really established certain features of the game and we were able to visualize the level more clearly. We're excited to keep it up. Here’s to week 8!

This week we've been really focused on the sizzle reel to have the structure of it in the best possible version, so the last three weeks is just producing what remains. So don't spend more time with the introduction and let's gooo!</p> <p> </p> <p>We wanted to show the sizzle reel to Scot at our meeting on Monday to have some feedback of the new version soon, but, as he had an issue and couldn't meet us that day, I had some extra time to refine it as much as possible, while Pablo began creating the layouts for the final sizzle reel and pitch. So on Tuesday we met and Scot gave us his oppinion about how to improve it and also how sound could help to take the narrative to the next level. I also pitched him the project, because he was the only mentor that haven't seen the new version of the pitch yet. He also gave us some great advise about it, so it was a very useful session.</p> <p> </p> <p>We've also had a session with Rafi on friday, very focused also on the sizzle reel. He helped us to identify some images that weren't so readable and he gave us very cool ideas to empower some key moments of the reel as well. He suggested me to make a new pass on the text, not thinking on the images but focusing on telling the ideas in the most effective way possible, so it becomes catchier and more fluent.</p> <p> </p> <p>This week, Pablo has been working a lot on designing and creating illustrations and layouts. We have our final designs for most of the characters, so now it's a matter of drawing the right images to tell what is in the pitch and the sizzle reel. Let's see some art, shall we? First, we have been trying to polish the main characters' designs, here are the two brothers' development. The changes are now very small, but this is because we are very close to the final versions and this means changing just some lines and attitudes to make them perfect.</p> <p> </p> <div The ideal situation would be to have every illustration painted, but as we don't have so much time, I'm making a list of which frames need priority at painting and which aren't, so if we couldn't finish everyone, we still would have the most important ones. Also, I've done a color script to see how colour changes narratively in the sizzle, so we have a colour guide to follow when painting. Week Six - Building the Game
Hey everyone! Over the past week, we’ve been hard at work trying to create the narrative of our game and thinking about how it ties in with our gameplay. We are beginning to develop the levels in Unity using the mechanics we created in our prototypes. We also had some useful sessions with our mentors which helped us to identify the next steps for our project.

In Unity, we are building our level according to the user flow we created. We are creating an environment that will contain a number of missing objects that the user will need to restore by dragging in the correct translations. We’re trying to find a way to lay out the words in a clear and accessible way. We are also considering how the objects that need to be restored can be used to illustrate the narrative and theme of the game which is connection and communication.

In our meeting with Kevin, we discussed how users can test this game conveniently. We believe that building our project for WebGL may be preferable as it would be easier to share this with other potential testers. We also discussed what the build for our deliverable will be, which is where we discovered we needed to make some changes. As neither I nor Gina have access to a Mac, we couldn’t build for iOS. This means that our final deliverable for STL will be developed for Android tablets instead.

In our meeting with Sonja, we learnt a lot about the industries she’s worked in and the professional practices adopted by different types of companies. Hearing about how smaller companies distribute work got us to consider our own distribution of work as a two-person team.

Daryl gave a very useful presentation about pitch decks and showed us great examples that showcased important topics to cover such as:

Explaining the core gameplay loop.

Highlighting the gap in the market for our game.

Creating a moodboard to present the theme and inspirations for the game.

And much more useful topics!

The plan, for now, is to continue developing the levels for the game and tying in the narrative with the mechanics to create an engaging experience for both players. </div> <p> </p> <p>I intend to make a quick color script for the sizzle reel when we had it more or less clear, so we can set the tone of the narrative very fast with the palette.</p> <p> </p> <p>This week has been also the week of trying how our pitch is working now. I've pitched it to Kris, Andrew, Maureen and Rafi and they've given us a very precious feedback, but overall, we are in a very good point with it, so we are going to focus more on the sizzle and on producing the art that goes with the pitch. Anyway, I've written all the feedback down, so I'll come back to it in maybe a week or two to polish it and set it up to the final delivery (which isn't so far!). </p> <p> </p> <p>For me this has been a rough week, because I wanted to make so many things but I don't have the time to be working on everything at the same time, and I have to prioritize what is better for the project. That's why I've been a bit less specific on the notes for Pablo and giving him more general directions: I love designing characters and backgrounds, but I've accepted that I can't do everything in the proyect, specially when Pablo is a great artist that comes with really gorgeous artworks. That's part of why we've developped this chain of work that I mentioned before about him making the layouts and me working on the lights and colour palettes, so I can work on what I'm best giving him space enough to make what he is best at, and I'm pretty happy with it. It doesn't mean that I am going to stop making notes on the designs, it's just that intstead of making a lot of very specific notes about every drawing, I'm trying to focus more on the main aspects, so I don't spend that much time making them so I have more time to focus on my tasks.</p> <p> </p> <p>To finish the recap, I just wanted to say that I almost have the new version of the sizzle reel, I'm excited about it and I hope to be able to show you all soon. Week Six: Bring the Art & Story to a Rolling Boil

This week my goal is to finalize the artwork and continue practicing my pitch as I will be recording my final pitch video with Sony Talent League next week. </p> <p> </p> <blockquote> <p>Story & Character</p> </blockquote> <p> </p> <ul> <li>Character design, arcs and purposes and their learnings have been made.
