This Halloween, Face the Real Fear: Starting Something New
Goblins, ghouls, and… entrepreneurship; they all strike fear in us.
Putting yourself or your work out there can feel like walking through a haunted house blindfolded. You have no idea what’s lurking around the corner.
Doubt creeps in like ghosts in the dark, haunting every creator, myself included.
When I first released Dolphin Dude, I knew I had a meaningful message and a fun story… but I wasn’t sure it had substance.
“Is this any good? Is the market too crowded? Can I really do this on my own?”
I wasn’t a trained children’s author. I didn’t study linguistics or child psychology. I just trusted my gut…and maybe a bit of magic.
And it worked. Not because it was perfect, but because I believed in it. I believed in me.
So, how did I face the monster (fear) under my bed?
Sorry to disappoint but there’s no magic elixir that makes fear disappear. It came down to one simple, mortal choice:
Would I rather stay frozen in fear and live with regret, or step into the unknown and create something that might just change lives… including my own?
There’s no right answer. Some people prefer the safety of their coffin…I mean, comfort zone.
And look, I’m not saying it’s easy to stare fear in the face, but here’s the truth:
How do you get over the fear of public speaking? You speak.
How do you get over the fear of flying? You fly.
How do you get over the fear of starting your own project? You start.
That’s the paradox of fear; the only way out is through.
It’s eerie. It’s uncomfortable. But it’s also where the real magic happens.
Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing more about Dolphin Dude and the journey behind it. But I’ll be honest, I’m still scared. I have no formal background in animation, and I probably have no business making an animated series. But I’m doing it anyway.
Because you never know what can happen when you choose to believe in yourself instead of the ghosts in your head.
