  • Modernizing Heritage: How to Showcase Your Unique Culture in Modern Media and Make It Interesting!

<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p><em>They say creativity is dying in the era of AI. But we believe true creativity thrives when you look backward just as much as you look forward.</em></p> <p> </p> <p>We live in a world flooded with media, from games to films to apps, everything competes for attention. So how do you take something ancient, local, maybe even unheard of, and turn it into something the modern world actually wants to engage with?</p> <p> </p> <p>The answer lies in <strong>modernizing heritage, </strong>finding bold, unexpected ways to bring your culture to life without losing its soul.</p> <p> </p> <p>At <strong>Sunnymoon Project</strong>, that's exactly what we set out to do with <strong>Nurveil</strong>, our Phoenician-inspired game filled with light, mystery, and quirky characters.</p> <p> </p> <p>Here’s how you can showcase your own culture or heritage in modern media, and make it impossible to ignore while using examples from our own game!</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>1. Start with Real Roots, Not Clichés</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>Forget the tired tropes. Real culture is more than sand dunes, treasure and pyramids (we're looking at you, Hollywood).<br> <br> Go deeper! language, forgotten myths, ancient symbols, even superstitions, those hidden gems are your gold mine.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>In Nurveil:</strong><br> We based our world on the rarely represented Phoenician culture, but not the usual textbook stuff. We dove into ancient words, maritime myths, and the spirit of exploration the Phoenicians were known for. Our hero, <strong>Nur </strong>(Meaning Light), doesn’t fight sea serpents and eats shawarma. He travels through a fractured realm of light and darkness inspired by real historical symbolism. The sun and moon were a big deal back in these times and they were worshiped like the moon goddess of motherhood and war, same goes for the Solar cults that resided in the Baalbek temple.<br>  </p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"> <div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXecTRTXPYSb5dJS6LI7XPL2joAltXW37D9s9mXBWVyyBa21BMNQBezfZyzn644jDJRIKl8sdNxlYiQ1-irqEEhth9yxdBow4UHVqCnCR88GAhP8d8SaxBT7Jy5p7VLchTrfw2h4?key=mvlAZZF-oCDVEXugi4WemA"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXecTRTXPYSb5dJS6LI7XPL2joAltXW37D9s9mXBWVyyBa21BMNQBezfZyzn644jDJRIKl8sdNxlYiQ1-irqEEhth9yxdBow4UHVqCnCR88GAhP8d8SaxBT7Jy5p7VLchTrfw2h4?key=mvlAZZF-oCDVEXugi4WemA"></a></div></div> <br><p>  </p> </div> <p> </p> <p><strong>2. Blend the Old with the Unexpected</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>Not everything ancient has to feel dusty and serious. One of the best ways to modernize heritage? Take a core cultural symbol and flip the mood entirely.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>In Nurveil:</strong><br> We turned the <strong>Star Queendom</strong>, rooted in ancient star myths for ship navigation, into a full-blown party capital similar to modern day Beirut. Think glowing roller rinks, raves, circus tents, and parades, while still weaving in real Phoenician influences like navigation, astronomy, and cosmic symbols. It's history with glitter on top and players love it.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXeFHYLCNUlZwb9_aFd5Qz-8RylFETyy8b4LCv-t0EPBdsVcdZ4pvoEmQmS9wgSq-K-gHVh3FLImHAukTi4YeDl_RqUFPirGSTOMAbGD0nEJ17l6zLuc1wYaLAhcjqTP3TJpvlQD?key=mvlAZZF-oCDVEXugi4WemA"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXeFHYLCNUlZwb9_aFd5Qz-8RylFETyy8b4LCv-t0EPBdsVcdZ4pvoEmQmS9wgSq-K-gHVh3FLImHAukTi4YeDl_RqUFPirGSTOMAbGD0nEJ17l6zLuc1wYaLAhcjqTP3TJpvlQD?key=mvlAZZF-oCDVEXugi4WemA"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p><strong>3. Characters Are Your Cultural Messengers</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>Forget lectures let your characters carry the culture. Through speech, design, quirks, and beliefs, they reflect the soul of the world.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>In Nurveil:</strong></p> <p> </p> <ul> <li> <strong>Safe (Meaning Sword)</strong>, our palace guard, is a striped hyena which is the national animal of Lebanon. They are facing a decline in population due to illegal hunting and that is basically the story of Safe, the last of his kind.<br>  </li> <li> <strong>Norah</strong>, the priestess oryx, quotes old Arab proverbs and superstitions.<br>  </li> <li>Even enemies, like the <strong>Toum</strong>, borrow traits from a regional cuisine favorite, Garlic..</li> </ul> <p> </p> <p>Players absorb the culture naturally, through interaction, not exposition dumps.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXcDnRQBzor2Tkk2uv0BvphXrTdtio32u-ayxfehVPMajNXFy9M1D2-bmMJERMruNel7lHnbJE3OLsoewS01pVgZyDi7WyaLMDl25SCM1uxoMVHQc48pcJsIvLnMriRTH-_6JEC9?key=mvlAZZF-oCDVEXugi4WemA"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXcDnRQBzor2Tkk2uv0BvphXrTdtio32u-ayxfehVPMajNXFy9M1D2-bmMJERMruNel7lHnbJE3OLsoewS01pVgZyDi7WyaLMDl25SCM1uxoMVHQc48pcJsIvLnMriRTH-_6JEC9?key=mvlAZZF-oCDVEXugi4WemA"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p><strong>4. Design with Symbolism, Not Just Aesthetics</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>Visuals tell a story too. Patterns, architecture, props, they all whisper the world’s history.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>In Nurveil:</strong><br> Our world map, temples, clothing and environments hide Phoenician symbols and items, ancient star patterns, and subtle references to regional crafts, Like Fifi as the unique Jezzine cutlery. Even the clothes on Lira (Merchant) are inspired by patterns on our modern paper money</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXfLDKosKMdC_H_RkFojWj2Ft6EVcG6PaTQlTENyGph4OinPmrWR40PVcg2kD07n3aXCufnJ1jV06ZbjlcHWqiR2quvrmsF-aiI7Q0390Q8cZAGs0VUIptMMWPNLSuMAAi28fxs6?key=mvlAZZF-oCDVEXugi4WemA"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXfLDKosKMdC_H_RkFojWj2Ft6EVcG6PaTQlTENyGph4OinPmrWR40PVcg2kD07n3aXCufnJ1jV06ZbjlcHWqiR2quvrmsF-aiI7Q0390Q8cZAGs0VUIptMMWPNLSuMAAi28fxs6?key=mvlAZZF-oCDVEXugi4WemA"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p><strong>5. Respect the Past But Entertain the Present</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>You’re not making a history book. Keep it fun, interactive, emotional. Modern media thrives on engagement.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>In Nurveil:</strong><br> The game is packed with humor, mystery, and even lighthearted chaos (yes, you can buy a glowing rainbow rainbow knefeh). It's culturally rich, but it never feels like homework.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXc7Scu9Gywqcwz1kQxnpt6J7fDVLR4XwVeQUaTBbCCG7GGC4tcGp44DSebMbsqRyIZNN8co_i1FFVgcVkEXkwekhlF-xMwPC115bNDqY4qJG4ETAOepICqOoWonRdGqrVT__GVK?key=mvlAZZF-oCDVEXugi4WemA"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXc7Scu9Gywqcwz1kQxnpt6J7fDVLR4XwVeQUaTBbCCG7GGC4tcGp44DSebMbsqRyIZNN8co_i1FFVgcVkEXkwekhlF-xMwPC115bNDqY4qJG4ETAOepICqOoWonRdGqrVT__GVK?key=mvlAZZF-oCDVEXugi4WemA"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p><strong>Final Thought: Heritage is Power, If You Let It Evolve</strong></p> <p> </p> <p>Modernizing culture doesn’t mean diluting it, it means amplifying its spirit for today’s world. • How to Trim Your Prototype into an MVP

<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>We’ve all been there, that wild rush of early prototyping, where every idea feels essential and somehow not that hard to build. But by the time your project has a character creator, 30 mechanics, and a moral alignment system, maybe it's no longer the small cosy game you had in mind. Suddenly, you are in too deep to see what's fun anymore.</p> <p> </p> <p>We started development in a game jam, so when we decided to continue and started brainstorming, ideas were plentiful. But we had to face the hardest truth: <strong>not everything needs to make it into the game.</strong> </p> <p> </p> <p>In fact, most of it shouldn’t.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p><em>Here’s how we learned to <strong>cut features without cutting the soul</strong> of the game:</em></p> <p> </p> <p>Before you cut, define the core pillars of your game.</p> <p> </p> <p>If a feature doesn’t support that core, kill it!</p> <p> </p> <p>What is your game in one sentence? For Splash &amp; Dash it’s:</p> <p> </p> <blockquote> <p><em> “A chaotic multiplayer game where you paint the arena to win and tune your car as you progress through the tournament.”</em></p> </blockquote> <p> </p> <p><br>  </p> <p> </p> <p><strong><em>Ask yourself:</em></strong></p> <p> </p> <p>“Is it supporting the game loop, or distracting from it?”</p> <p> </p> <p>“Is it actually fun, or does it just <em>sounds</em> fun?“</p> <p> </p> <p>We had ideas of mechanics that sounded good, but they slowed the pace and confused players, They were cooler to talk about than to actually play.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p><strong><em>Prototype for Learning. </em></strong></p> <p> </p> <p>Just because you built it doesn’t mean it stays.</p> <p> </p> <p>In Splash &amp; Dash we have a policy of testing everything, just because we built a feature, it does not mean it will be in the final game. Test often and bring as many players as possible to test the initial prototypes and MVP.</p> <p> </p> <p>Keep track of the data that is useful for your game. Watch what players enjoy and what they ignore. If something doesn’t improve the experience or you can’t polish it in time, cut it.</p> <p> </p> <p>Cutting lets you shift from building everything to refining what matters. Your game becomes tighter and easier to work on. </p> <p> </p> <p>Cutting isn't a failure, it's design and a part of the development experience. Letting go of features makes room for Juicy polish and time to actually fix important bugs before launch.</p> <p> </p> <p><br>  </p> <p> </p> <p><strong><em>So if you read this diagonally, keep only this part:</em></strong></p> <p> </p> <p>Define your game in one sentence</p> <p> </p> <p>Kill your darlings (I know you love your ideas, you can still use them elsewhere)</p> <p> </p> <p>Prototype to learn, not to accumulate</p> <p> </p> <p>Lock the core loop</p> <p> </p> <p>Cutting is clarity</p> <p> </p> <p>If you feel like making these decisions takes a lot of emotional effort and team communication, invest in that and remember</p> <p> </p> <blockquote> <p><em>“Slow is steady, steady is fast.”</em></p> </blockquote> <p> </p> <p><br> Got a Miro board full of research and a spreadsheet packed with half-finished mechanics? Breathe. Focus on the fun. <strong>Talk to your players</strong>. Testing <strong>early and often</strong> will give you the clarity you’re looking for.<br>  </p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><em><img alt="Splash &amp; Dash GameJam / MVP" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsiZGF0YSI6MTk1ODQ4LCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--b8be36ad9918a3e62a64586db9f04a49ef5e1ebc/Screenshot%202025-07-02%20165718.png" style="height:1024px;width:1638px;"><br> (humble beginnings, these are screenshots of the GameJam game that worked as a MVP for what is now Splash&amp;Dash (there is a Windows build on the <a href="https://discord.gg/PAXXJ6y9ck">Discord server</a>, go try this mess done in 6 days)</em></div> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"> <br><p> </p> <em><img alt="our first character select" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsiZGF0YSI6MTk1ODUxLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--c1e5b92bfc6410eeafc77fdf14af393b7473a33a/Screenshot%202025-07-02%20165803.png" style="height:1024px;width:1638px;"></em> </div> <p> </p> <p>Want to see how we trimmed things down in <em>Splash &amp; Dash</em>? Splash & Dash

  • Introducing Splash & Dash, your new indie playground.

<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>Hey everyone,</p> <p> </p> <p>Excited to introduce you to Splash &amp; Dash, a multiplayer arena racing game that’s all about dashing around and splashing paint everywhere.</p> <p> </p> <p>Picture yourself and your friends duking it out across five chaotic rounds, each packed with obstacles, power-ups, and strategic twists. Whoever paints the largest portion of the arena in their colour walks away the champion. Sounds fun? Trust me, it’s a blast.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsiZGF0YSI6MTk1Nzc4LCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--f23af84fd73f1bc45c478f50458ad137512f146a/Splash&amp;Dash%20JJUN%20-%20Character%20Select%20Wheel.jpg"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsiZGF0YSI6MTk1Nzc4LCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--f23af84fd73f1bc45c478f50458ad137512f146a/Splash&amp;Dash%20JJUN%20-%20Character%20Select%20Wheel.jpg"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p>Each vehicle has its own class, so you can play as a heavy “brawler,” ramming opponents out of the arena, or as a “speedster” who focuses on precision and agility.</p> <p> </p> <p>As you breeze through each course, you leave a trail of colour behind you, and those aren’t just for show; they’re your ticket to victory. Ran out of paint? No problem, drift your car to recharge your tank, or grab power-ups scattered around the map for an instant refill.<br> <br> Every tournament unfolds over five rounds, and after each match, you pick a card that stacks with your previous choices, tweaking your abilities to suit your playstyle. Want to be the fastest? The bulkiest? The biggest paint spreader? Show us what you got!</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"> <div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsiZGF0YSI6MTk1Nzc5LCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--2b41f52f6d0d90864cd266a4887b881856599155/Splash&amp;Dash%20JJUN%20-%20Upgrade%20Screen.jpg"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsiZGF0YSI6MTk1Nzc5LCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--2b41f52f6d0d90864cd266a4887b881856599155/Splash&amp;Dash%20JJUN%20-%20Upgrade%20Screen.jpg"></a></div></div> <br><p> </p> <br><p> Let me guide you through the major points of our game:</p> </div> <p> </p> <p><strong>Game Mechanics:</strong>  We designed a fast-paced, competitive experience where territory control is intuitive. Classic racing elements: speed boosts, drifting, meet paint-based area control and a simplified deck builder system. In my opinion, Pure fun.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Multiplayer:</strong> Whether you’re side-by-side on the couch or battling online, Splash &amp; Dash has you covered. Local play lets you trash-talk siblings in person, while online lobbies let you prove your skills to a worldwide audience. Our lobbies are packed with unlockable cosmetics, mini-games, and social spaces where you can meet friends before diving in. Replayability was a priority when designing the experience so each match evolves based on the strategies players bring to the arena.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Level Design:</strong> We set out to create dynamic, visually engaging arenas that remain easy to read, even when things get hectic. Bold, stylised visuals help you track paint trails and spot opponents at a glance. From narrow corridors that force paint skirmishes to sprawling open zones where you can broadcast massive colour spreads, every map is designed for high-energy mayhem.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Art Style:</strong> Vibrant colours are the soul of Splash &amp; Dash. We’ve adopted a stylised, Saturday morning cartoon aesthetic, bright neons, bold paint splashes, and clear visual cues that keep you in the action. Our evolving art direction, which we call “Haunted Punk,” it merges playful designs with subtle, edgy flourishes, creating a look that feels both fun and reminiscent of 90s video games. </p> <p> </p> <p><br> <strong>Scope: </strong>We intentionally kept the feature set compact so that we could iterate rapidly, playtest extensively, and polish until each arena felt just right. This lean approach also gives us room to add new content, arenas, power-ups, seasonal events etc, without overloading the project or the team.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"> <div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsiZGF0YSI6MTk1NzgwLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--41ba10d75f60f82e30329d009c986cbe054f33e6/Splash&amp;Dash%20JJUN%20-%20HUD_05.jpg"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsiZGF0YSI6MTk1NzgwLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--41ba10d75f60f82e30329d009c986cbe054f33e6/Splash&amp;Dash%20JJUN%20-%20HUD_05.jpg"></a></div></div> <br><p> </p> <br><p> In the next posts, I will let you know more about how we are bringing Splash &amp; Dash to life. We are mid-development with hopes of launching later this year (so do keep in mind the visuals are alpha AF). Still, the game feels made by us for you. We’re a small, four-person team that values making games with players in mind, not profit.</p> </div> <p> </p> <p> Our team motto sums it up best:</p> <p> </p> <p><em><strong>“</strong>Our mission is to create games that celebrate the joy of couch co-op and light-hearted competition. We prioritise fun, crafting simple, accessible games with performance-driven art. Honest pricing and player feedback are at the heart of what we do.<strong>”</strong></em></p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsiZGF0YSI6MTk1NzgxLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--ec2823f391d94351fb4c9680baaf56e65a65ce50/Splash&amp;Dash%20JUN%20-%20%20arena%20overview.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsiZGF0YSI6MTk1NzgxLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--ec2823f391d94351fb4c9680baaf56e65a65ce50/Splash&amp;Dash%20JUN%20-%20%20arena%20overview.png"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>It’s a game anyone can pick up right away, but there’s enough depth that mastering it takes time. Splash & Dash

  • Introducing the Team. Introducing the dynamic. Introducing the project.

<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>Welcome to the Sunnymoon Project Realm, where creativity runs in the family and ambition never hits the brakes. We are an indie studio run by three sisters who somehow haven’t killed each other (yet). We draw, we animate, we build weird worlds, and we bicker just enough to keep things interesting.</p> <p>The Team:</p> <p><action-text-attachment sgid="eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsiZGF0YSI6ImdpZDovL3RodS11bml2ZXJzZS9Vc2VyLzM5Nz9leHBpcmVzX2luIiwicHVyIjoiYXR0YWNoYWJsZSJ9fQ==--4ce95e5e1d62d6779987070e19e27e3fce7e6619" content-type="application/vnd.actiontext.user_mention" content='"&lt;a class="\&amp;quot;lexxy-mention-attachment\&amp;quot;" href="\%22/village/warriors/dahlia-khodur\%22"&gt;@Dahlia Khodur&lt;/a&gt;"'><a class="lexxy-mention-attachment" data-controller="mention-preview" data-mention-preview-url-value="/mentions/preview?id=397&amp;type=User" data-remote="true" href="https://www.trojan-unicorn.com/village/warriors/dahlia-khodur">@Dahlia Khodur</a></action-text-attachment><strong></strong> – Co-founder, UI designer, and studio manager. We debate over fonts, hug over bugs, and occasionally summon ancient gods with our brainstorming sessions.</p> <p>And speaking of summoning...</p> <p> Meet <em>Nurveil</em> — our latest game child!</p> <p>Nurveil is a narrative adventure where your choices ripple through a changing world. You play as Nur, a being of light wandering the lands of the Sun, Moon, and Star Queendoms. Solve ancient puzzles, battle twisted monsters, and uncover hidden paths as you piece together a long-lost story. Dialogue features real-time interaction, allowing NPCs to remember your words (via mic or text input) and respond in ways that unlock quests and shift the perception of the world around you. It is inspired by ancient Phoenician vibes emotionally, existentially and beautifully.</p> <p>So welcome aboard! This blog is where we’ll <strong>share behind-the-scenes chaos, game updates, character reveals, and possibly our group therapy notes</strong>.</p> <p>Stay tuned. We have only just begun.</p> <p> </p> </div>
