  • Progress Post Nr 6 - Bridges to go places

Ok bridges are all settle! Time to had little creatures on them. Already had some ideas of what to add here.
Also I say creatures because : 1- non all are going to be humans, because I really want to have this representative idea of an inclusive enviroment whitout actually being super realistic about it? Idk if I am putting this into words right but yeah, 2 -not all of the characters are going to be humans.
Also, can I hire Craig Mullins to make little people for me? is that allowed? ahahah

  • FINAL COMP

This is actually a few days old now, but here is the final composition.
As I mentioned in the previous updates, I learnt aloooot of 3D, but it's nowhere near enough to proper translate the mood I have in my head into an illustration. SO back to good old freehand drawing.

  • Creating a scenario where characters can live.

I was trying to create scenarios where characters can come and perform something, so i chose the final thumbnail where people are on rooftops and in their homes, doing what they love and enjoying beauty they created with nature.

  • Final touches

<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>By the end I ended up making the setting darker, since I really wanted the umbrellas to stand out. Besides this the final touches include:</p> <p> </p> <p>- Gaussian blur to add more depth and increase focus on the two characters.</p> <p> </p> <p>- Fog, smoke and rain in the background. Since it's raining, the atmosphere changes more the farthest it is from our eyes.</p> <p> </p> <p>- Made the umbrellas red and more vibrant. They were not as visible before, blending into the background.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p>In these final touches, I also retouched the characters to fit the altered setting, and played a little bit with the highlights on the protagonists:</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBdk9OIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--f658e8c06a0581ac1792063a6e09c2c16df43ad8/thu9.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBdk9OIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--f658e8c06a0581ac1792063a6e09c2c16df43ad8/thu9.png"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> </div>

Blocking flats before entering the shading fase, this is the moment I decide on the base of construction for the overall feel of the piece, even if some colors end up changing slightly so the ambience can come together they will build on top of this base.

  • 2D Environment art - Ruin

In order to add value to the concept, I constructed an Environment related to the final piece.

This ruin remains unexplored for decades, it's up to two brave minds to venture out and explore this landscape.

  • Final Piece - Composition Study

    Composition study done.

This is the begining stage of the final piece, after working on the story, the characters, the world, etc. This is how everything will be staged.

for context: This concept begins way after the world had 5G. The internet itself has evolved in many fields of science, such as wireless web charging and internet body projection.

The internet now covers the world, and electromagnetic waves are such that weather changes,      building storms. Lightning strikes down relentlessly, while brilliant minds capture their essence in energy capsules.

On the wireless side, those with enough inteligence can access the infinite knowledge of the world wide web only using their minds. Some even have figure out how to conjure spells - or download bots- through the use of portable satelites. They can use them for managing basic everyday machines, to highly complex ones such as Exoarmour, used for heavy tasks.

I also love viper wave asthetic and pixel art so i dicided to make a lowpoly city with a little park with a big tree so it's my hero prop in the projetct

The colors are inspired by vaper wave art and kind of a cyber punk vibe.

  • Squeezing the Designs

At this point I have a pretty firm idea of where I want the image to go both thematically and visually. However before the last stretch I had to allow myself the chance to explore the other possibilities in my head.

The background showcasing the towns living amongst the landscape had a solid design from the beginning. I did want to look at utilising different shapes that could represent the area I live in more. Some alternative designs were more interesting both in color and composition (the iteration with the pink sky) however distracted from the main focus of the antenna on the hill. Ultimately the narrative/idea takes importance over squeezing out every drop of visual pizzazz.

I'm particular to vibrant skies however after exploring some other variations of the colour I found that if too bright, the sky draws away from the focus point. I'm trying to work from a limited palette and still feel that the blue and purple accented with small hints of warm oranges/yellows feels the strongest.

For the antenna, I know I want the design to remain simple, friendly and appealing against the backdrop. In this constraint, I have been avoiding throwing cables, greebles and other such scifi extras into the mix (which is very difficult as I love that stuff!). An iteration I was particularly fond of was shaped like a lavender flower but ended up too complicated.
I iterated on the design by hopping into blender and mocking up the alternative shapes. Playing around with the shaders to achieve the luminescent/iridescent look was quite fun.
Sadly it looks like scifi lollypop won't win though!
