Digital Transition
Adding the elements to each corner.
The temples all connect the elemts to the center.
This part of the process includes the main / imporatant pieces from the original sketch.
My idea was to explore the power of autonomous machines working as a single organism.
So I came up with the idea of having large structures underwater, which can be pretty much impossible task for regular human workers.
I decided to start with some designs for the structures, then I spent some time on a 3D scene where I could explore more and understand better the scale and possibilities. I finished the work with photobashing and painting in Photoshop.
Amur and locket composition set up.
I emphasize the importance of breaking old thinking and emotional patterns that hold us back. The world is our playground and we must change our relationship with it. People who are in one with nature are as rare as Amur leopards are. And no wonder why. Living in fast-paced cities and isolated from experiences that would awaken our spirituality. There's little adventure in getting lost in a subway and few people are able to immerse themselves in a 5-day transformational event. It's now time for technology to bring the awareness lost generations ago - To awaken humanity.
Finally getting a clearer picture of the final product. I'm honestly quite happy with how it's turning out, seeing how this is a first for me. Decided a check mark with a go message on the traffic light would be a fun twist and more closely related with the previous idea that it symbolizes the connectivity trough 5G.
At this point in the process the submission deadline was coming dangerously close. I had put my head down and really focus on getting a finished product. Time management was a disaster this last few weeks, with Uni exams in the way I had little time to work on my submission, this meant that some corners had to be cut and things as more realistic characters and pedestrians had to be cut and toned back.
In this image we can see some of my planning for the wild life and plants in the city. The idea here is that with every building, comes a green roof, to compensate for the previous land that the building now occupies.
Earlier this week I looked on the projects process and was dissatisfied. The city looked bland and generic. My intention from the start was to have a near future city. I didn't want the typical white, clean and full of vegetation cities we see so much in media. The utopian setting didn't intrest me much.
I decided then, instead of trying to keep forcing my way trough the illustration, why not just start from scratch and remodel the city side of things. So that's what I did. Inspired by the amazing team at Blizzard, I took cues from they're work in Overwatch and redesigned my city.
After first seeing the prompt for this challenge I had a lot of ideas but coming to a decision on what i wanted to portray on my piece and in what manner, was a really difficult task. This here was my final sketch where I made all the creative decisions before going into finner detail and polish. I decided to make a small lab where, in the future, new natural foods would be investigated by humans, with indispensable help of a full set of 5G equipped helper robots, all this with a touch of fun and fluff.
Writing this now (the day of complition), it's intresting seeing the progress I had made before, and how it shaped this project. I didn't have much confidence that I would be able to tackle this scene and that it might be a bit to ambitious for somebody of my skill level, especially since I wanted to take a more realistic aproach to shading. Something I dropped on the later stages of development.
In the picture above we can see some light sketching, trying to figure out poses and composition a bit better.
There's not much to say here except that I started blocking in the scene directly in Blender, since I don't have much experience with painting backgrounds. I added a traffic light for pedestrians, which, admittedly doesn't make much sense, city planning wise. Hoewever the idea behind it is that it'll be lit up green signifying the transfer of data between the two protagonists.
I started off with a few thumbnails, these were inspired by works and images I had found trough my research before hand.
At first I wanted to do a city scene surrounded by water falls or plants, with a dynamic and wide angle.
The first thumbnail was the one that spoke most to me, inspired by a certain shot by Alberto Mielgo, which took a very frontal and symmetric aproach to the camera view.
Adding the last elements, color temperature, atmosphere, some painterly textures and a couple more elements. The holographic screen cought the attention of some curios wannabe musicians, perhaps? And also some camels that enjoy the shadow and the brezze from the slow motion of the helix.
Immersive Music is a Non-Profit Organization, created to unite musicians from all over the world. It's a physical platform where they can play live and remotely thanks to the low latency provided by the new 5G technology, merge their styles and cultural influences and at the same time raise awareness about our past mistakes so as not to repeat them again. For that matter the places for their stage/drones are specially chosen for their cultural, historical and/or educational value, to raise awareness aiming at a global society with an open mind and in harmony with the environment. It's like an archaeological trip to resignify these places and not just bury them into a dangerous oblivion.
Immersive Music provides a series of stage platforms equipped with holographic projection drones, condenser microphones to capture ambient sound, and heat and temperature sensors for an immersive 4D experience. You will be able to connect with your VR glasses and equipment and play your instrument in front of the sensor that will capture your movements and project them on the IM (Immersive Music) platform. You'll also be able to use your custom avatar or NFT if you prefer, but instead of being immersed in a metaverse, the holographic projections and sensors will bring the action into the real world and you'll be able to see and hear your bandmates playing on the platform locations all over the world. And who knows, inspire aspiring little musicians. The IM platform is a lightweight, solar-powered platform that uses drone technology for navigation to be as unobtrusive as possible to the environment.
Some of these places carefully curated are abandoned military bases from a warlike past that we do not wish to repeat, the ship graveyard in the Aral Sea, a failed test for trying to change the watercourses, the train graveyard in the Salar de Uyuni, the historical wonder of Machu Picchu and other abandoned or difficult or limited access places. Imagine playing your guitar in a remote, abandoned and/or forgotten place, sharing melodies with your musician friends from other parts of the world. You can also share the experience with other users who can live it through your eyes and your instrument. All this is Immersive Music, bringing musicians closer, growing awareness.
I came across THU’s golden ticket contest through artstation and immediately knew that I had to submit something as I had already begun the early stages of generating environmentally-informed fictional landscapes, using artificial intelligence. My background is in interaction design and human-robot interaction but I had no interest in theming this piece about robots, rather I wanted to create images of the future that I already envision in my heart and head daily.
Originally, I thought I would generate a few images, and choose and submit the best one, but instead, my designer brain took over and I generated, probably hundreds of images and sketches, trying to visually encapsulate all of the technology ideas and principles I have studied and absorbed throughout my life. I found myself continually researching and reading to refine my prompting and ideas. I found that the images I was able to render were able to give me entryways to even more creative ideas, which in turn created a delightful and enlightening creative process, that was more valuable in itself than any one picture could ever be. I played around with generating images of sustainable homes, communities, interiors and cityscapes in a variety of ecosystems and the common themes that existed across the board that design was individualized, human and land centered. After creating a narrative for a boy living in the year 2112. I plan to make an online gallery of the images so that others can add these possible futures to their imagination banks as they create and move through the world.
The future will be resource-based, we will work with our environments to enhance them to work for us, in symbiotic ways, rather than seeing the environment as something just to take from. Education will be a priority, homes will be made sustainably and in ways that are suited to their environment, in a way that is good both for the land and the people, as ultimately what is negative for the environment, will eventually be negative for those that inherit the world we live in. I believe very strongly that we are all bound together in a mutual desire to see our children live in a world where they are free and happy and able to grow. I will end this by sharing a poem that I found while researching. It struck a chord with me and I think it reflects the tone that I wanted to convey with all the images that I generated for this project.

True Wealth
Is the already accomplished
Organization of human capabilities
To clothe
To shelter feed
Protect, inform
And accommodate
The initiatives of human life
The magnitude of wealth consists of the number
Of forward days
Of the number of human beings already provided for
Note: Attached image is an illustration I did with the intention of trying to put it into a designer's studio. I ended up deciding against the composite image idea, but I do enjoy the way it turned out.
Even though I hadn't heard of this contest or THU just a month ago, I had such a delight creating this collection of images, it was absolutely what my imagination was itching to do. Here are some of the images that I didn't end up selecting but were informative to my process.
The concepts behind these images are really important to me, and I think one of the biggest things I can contribute to the conversation as I have a lot of background in designing complex human factors-oriented systems. I hope this image helps shed some light on the thinking that went into my images. I could certainly talk about these things for hours on end, and just like the images I generated, it was somewhat difficult to decide what to include when distilling these principles down.
I would love to hear if you thought this infographic was easy to understand, or any other feedback you have. Especially if you are a non-native English speaker.
