  • More thumbnailing, perspective and sketch

<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <div class="lightbox-container"> <p>Hi!</p> <br><p> So quite a lot has happened since my last post</p> <br><p> </p> <br><p> First, after asking some more friends for feedback I found out I wasn't quite done with thumbnailing - the image wasn't flowing right yet, and I wasn't fully satisfied with the colors. After a bit of pushing and pulling, I found one thumbnail with a composition I liked, and one where I (and my friends) felt the colors worked better. Then I combined the two for my final thumbnail </p> <div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBOXIzQVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--31a821045c5ace43fc6d49714abd2dacc65cc802/colorThumbs2.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBOXIzQVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--31a821045c5ace43fc6d49714abd2dacc65cc802/colorThumbs2.png"></a></div></div> <p>Then I got started on constructing the perspective for the image. It really looks more complex than it is - as I'm mainly using circles and curves, the perspective get simplified somewhat. </p> <br><p> The most important part is implementing a bottom vanishing point, and making sure the degree of ellipses get bigger as they approach the bottom of the canvas.</p> <br><p> The array of elliptical lines is to make sure I have proper structure to the girders on the far wall.</p> <br><p> Though I got rid of some circular silhouettes to help the flow of the image, I'll also try to re-implement foreshortened circles within the silhouettes of the architecture later, since they are one of my main perspective cues.</p> <br><p> </p> <div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBOXYzQVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--886c62c1ed161ec1c872ca3e770a8f9a086fd9be/persp.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBOXYzQVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--886c62c1ed161ec1c872ca3e770a8f9a086fd9be/persp.png"></a></div></div> <div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBOXozQVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--42fe38f9a9e50854165da276c28472d628181626/perspSmol.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBOXozQVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--42fe38f9a9e50854165da276c28472d628181626/perspSmol.png"></a></div></div> <p>Here, you can also see a new compositional idea which was really important for the flow - a bunch of curved lines leading to the focal point.</p> <br><p> After this, I was on to updating my sketch to fit the perspective construction, which is where I'm at now</p> <br><p> </p> <div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBOTMzQVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--f5652c06871ff563887619f9f1996b0d058c370f/drawing_v005.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBOTMzQVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--f5652c06871ff563887619f9f1996b0d058c370f/drawing_v005.png"></a></div></div> <p>Though it looks a bit messy at this point, I trust that the structuring force of some solid linework and my planned out value composition will organize the image in the end.</p> <br><p> On to lines! • Color thumbnails

    On to colors!
The tricky bit was finding a balance between showing a fun and bright play-space and the cozy warmth that I would want in my home.

Currently my strategy is to show the bright bubbly fun in the mid- and background while the foreground shows a calm and cozy moment between two friends sketching

I'm planning on moving forward with A1 - I feel like it strikes the right balance of cozy and bright. I also generally prefer my A thumbnails because the magenta to blue contrast is stronger and more appealing than the navy to light blue contrast in the B thumbnails.

See you guys when I've completed the drawing stage in a couple of days!

  • Value Thumbnails

<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>Today I spent enhancing the flow of the composition as well as figuring out the values for the illustration. Also, after getting some feedback, I adjusted the thumbnail for perspective. I still expect further perspective adjustments in the drawing stage, but this now feels a lot closer to the flow of shapes i expect in the final piece.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"> <div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBem4yQVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--6f0bfb24527beb974ad1363f26f2cf8a3a2d80a9/jacobSchade_thumbnailFlow.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBem4yQVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--6f0bfb24527beb974ad1363f26f2cf8a3a2d80a9/jacobSchade_thumbnailFlow.png"></a></div></div> <br><p> Here's the main compositional idea of the image - I want to keep the viewer's gaze inside the big ellipse, mainly looking around the perimeter of the smaller ellipse, where I've placed my focal points</p> <br><p> </p> <br><p> </p> <div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBenIyQVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--8ab4bb420ca4ee91df22ee2ded399e4b1ab391db/THU_thumbnailValues2.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBenIyQVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--8ab4bb420ca4ee91df22ee2ded399e4b1ab391db/THU_thumbnailValues2.png"></a></div></div> <p>And here's an earlier value composition - scrapped because it was less clear, but also because I like the story better in the new composition - There's something special about sitting in the shade and sketching with a friend.</p> <br><p> </p> <br><p> Tomorow it's color thumbnailing and hopefully a lot of the drawing stage!</p> <br><p>  </p> </div> <p> </p> </div>

  • Getting started

Ever since a kid I've dreamt of a house that you would navigate by climbing and swimming - encouraging fun exercise to keep you healthy. Later in life I've fallen in love with art, so it's clear to me that this dream space should also be designed for art.
This theme felt like the prefect opportunity to explore that idea.

I start with a couple thumbnails to figure out how to best show the space, and end up settling on a high angle.
Though I like having a friend beckon the audience to join them on a climb in D, the image fails to show the full scope of the home because we can't see the water below.

Specifically, I'm going forward with C, because I like the sense of scale I get from the wide format, and because the left side of B felt a little too cluttered for me.

Excited to continue with the image and good luck to everyone else participating!
