Project Description
The Outer Core is a psychological horror game based on the experience of navigating the world as an autistic person. The project manifests as a marriage of VR game design and traditional fine art. The combined artforms will present together in an immersive installation, offering layered portrayals of a multifaceted reality. The game will consist of 3D modelled characters and environments designed to simulate common autistic states of being such as sensory overload, under/overstimulation, sensory bliss, meltdowns, shutdowns, anxiety, panic, confusion and autistic burn-out. The installation presenting the game prototype offering viewers the choice of either entering the game via VR headset, watching the VR headsets live feedback on LED screens or a pre recorded demo of the game environment projected onto the ceiling. Within the space, large 3D printed characters will be illuminated - user avatars from the game, as well as 3D models of buildings that populate the game world. The use of layered, repetitive and harmonised imagery and characters is intentionally overwhelming and all-encompassing. The installation aims to mimic the feeling of neurodivergent sensory overload and sensory bliss simultaneously - dependent on viewer perception. The Outer Core aims to resonate with the neurodivergent community and illuminate a different perspective for allistic people, bringing the virtual world of gaming a step closer to reality by reimaginging the horrors of everyday life.
