Entrudo - A musical game about Portuguese traditions
Twinkle Frog Studios
Project Description
Entrudo, an indie game about a Portuguese carnival tradition, started as a project made for a university module. Since the beginning of this "assignment" we wanted to do something unique and about a Portuguese tradition, since all of the Entrudo's developers are Portuguese. All of us wanted our game, Entrudo, to be fun and interesting, so we decided to look at different carnival traditions because to us, these traditions envoked feelings of happiness, fun, silliness and freedom. In the end, we ended up making our game about "Corrida do Entrudo", a Portuguese carnival tradition from the schist villages of Penedo de Goís, Coimbra. In this tradition, all of the villagers must dress up with cork masks, rags and sheets as well as one instrument (the last element not being mandatory) in order to join the race - they then go through all of the villages of Penedo de Goís disguised while enjoying the company of others without being judged. As we said before, a freeing and fun experience. We thought it would be perfect to connect exploration and rhythm minigames to this tradition, so that's what we did! This is how Entrudo was created. In Entrudo, expect fun rhythm minigames, cute and charming villagers (although some of them might be a bit grumpy), funny and cheeky dialogue, hand-draw animations, characters related to Portuguese mythology, several items to collect and different parts of Aldeia da Pena, one of the schist villages of Penedo de Goís, to explore.

Received Item Interaction
The player finally receives the little drum after a rhythm battle.

Promo Art - Finn
Here we have Finn, our lovely tourist, getting hyped up to join Entrudo's race and play his little drum.

Exploration part of Entrudo
This is one of the 4 areas of Entrudo. This is the farm area. In total we have two types of natural areas, the farm and garden areas and two "stone" areas, the residential and artisanal areas.

Rhythm Minigame
One of the nine rhythm minigames of Entrudo, featuring one of the three main NPCs - Ana.

Dialogue - Rhythm Battle
This is an example of a section of dialogue belonging to Rosa, one of the three main NPCs, before the start of a rhythm minigame. The different NPCs of the rhythm battle have different personalities. Rosa is a sweet and caring villager, Ana is a grumpy and cheeky young woman and finally Quim, an arrogant and smug musician.
