• A kick-off session appeared. It fills you with determination.

Hi there, Adrián writing for our weekly recap! This week has been a very important one, because, you know, kick-off session. We have been working a lot because of that, but also because we are very motivated to carry our project to the next level. Sooo let's go with the recap!

First of all, we have been working on the characters, both visually and written. Pablo has been focused on exploring visual options for them, while I've been exploring their cores: what they want, what they care about, what they need... We are trying to have the heart of our project very well defined, so in case we change things of our project (and it's changing a lot) we still know that our project remains talking about the same characters and topics and goes in the right direction (thank you Kris for your feedback ^^). But let's see some beautiful illustrations!

First of all, I want to share with you some of the process we are following for the designs. These are some concepts from Nico's monster, who is based on a radish:

These are cute, right? :D So when I receive these, I make some direction notes and corrections, to give Pablo an idea of what I think it's working and what isn't. Obviously, sometimes we don't agree, so we discuss until we reach an agreement (we had one about Hugo's design this same week, I'll show you later). This were my notes for these drawings:

So after my notes, Pablo keeps exploring in the direction we agree, making a new proposal, and I make some new notes:

So we keep on this process until we are good with what we have, basically. I'm going to share with you his concepts for other characters, so you can see the evolution of each one (I'll share my notes only if I think they really have something to say to you). Let's talk about the main event of the week! Our Kick-off session was really interesting and full of information. Due to a last minute change, we coundn't meet Andrew Maximov, but we met the rest of our mentors, and we have to say that we are really happy to have them on board! I think that they are perfect for our project (and really nice people). It was a lot of information to process, but let's go for the conclussions we draw from the session.

-We want to go in the direction of a more mood/vibes oriented pitch, rather than the heavy plot-driven pitch that we have right now.

-As I said before, we want to really clinch the core of our project, so we have something to check that we are on the right track. In order to do that, our main focus right now is developing characters, their desires, motivations, needs...

-It would be very interesting to create a fanbase of our project, because it's going to help us to get producers on board. We are thinking about creating a patreon/social media for the project and share some content, like a comic, a bestiary of monsters... Basically to develop our project sharing some content to arouse people's interest.

-We need to think seriously about who is our story for, why they care about it and why it has to be a feature film.

And to finish, I've been researching some music for the briefing we have to have ready for the session that we all have with Scot, but we´ll talk about it when the time comes.

This has been all for this week! A very full one, but really important for our journey. Thank you once more to the mentors, because they have given us very precious advice, and we're very excited to keep working with them. Have a nice weekend, guys!

  • Week Two: Back to the Drawing Board

“One step back can be three steps forward,” is a tip said to me last week that impacted my perspective. (Shout out to the THU team!)

WHAT I DID IN MY WEEK

I prepared a presentation of my project for all of my wonderful mentors and presented my project. It was an experience that brought nerves, joy, and connection, as well as learning. I was able to pitch my project and hear what worked and what needs work. Hearing their advice on what to do based on what I had is an opportunity I do not take for granted.

MY NEW GOALS

My key takeaway from the meeting with all the mentors is to table the engaging components and focus on developing compelling artwork. This will help me pitch effectively because I want this show to be seen.

WHAT COMES NEXT

1. Make a mood board.

2. I have been drafting a bible that can be used to build my pitch deck and final video. I identified the artwork needed, which will be the focus of my time with Sony Talent League. Also, I have begun my search to find an artist.

3. Organize, organize, organize. I have been developing a schedule, deadlines, and questions to bring to mentors and mapping out my work from start to finish. I always ask myself: what will I need? When will I need it? What will the artist need? When will they need it? What can I get done to make the other person's job easier?

HOW DO I FEEL?

To be honest, looking at the schedule from start to finish feels exciting and scary. I get those intrusive thoughts in the middle of the night saying, “You won’t get this done,” or “Remember that mistake you made five years ago?!” But when I breathe and then look at this rationally, I know I can be flexible. This story that I love is going to be brought new life, and importantly, this is fun!

INSPIRATION

If you have read this at the time of posting, Happy Lunar New Year! While I spent my weekend eating almond cookies and shrimp dumplings, my mom made a watercress soup and talked about how it brought her back to her childhood home. As I slurped and splattered the broth, I stopped and remembered that this is why I am writing this story; food can transport you home. Isn’t that magical?

Before we were able to move on to focus on the aesthetics of our interactive VR story, like visual development, background or character designs, we wanted to have a clear and working story, which we can work with. So we spent a lot of time coming up with concepts and putting them on paper, discussing them with each other and solving problems that might have come up.
An open question that needed to be answered first was if we rather aim for a more educational or a more entertaining story. So after debating about it we decided to go more the entertaining way and use sign language as the mechanics of the story.

Andrey using "Hand Tracking".

Out of many ideas that we had written, three especially caught our attention. And out of those three there was one we both liked and that was very interesting, but still not too ambitious for the two of us to fulfill within the upcoming weeks.
It is the story of an old man and his mountain. Set in an alpine environment we (the viewer/player) encounter an old deaf man and subsequently are being taught the basics of sign language. We also learn more about the mysterious background of this character and why we are the chosen one, who were meant to meet him.

Besides that, last week we continued doing research about ASL (american sign language), the language we want to use in our interactive story. Not only is it important for us to understand the basics, if we want to teach them to the viewers later on, but also because some signs bring challenges in combination with the headset we are using (Meta Quest 2). Since there are many signs that include the hand touching the head, which is not possible to be detected by the four cameras on the front of the headset, we decided to only focus on signs that don’t require the head for now.

Sebastian during the Kick-Off presentation explaining some challanges.

Concept for the in-game learning.

We also kept working on the development of the interactive part of the story. Signal, a VR story

    Mapo

  • Week Two - Rethinking, adapting and improving!

This week has been a little difficult but informative. After receiving feedback from our lovely mentors me and Gina have continued to work on researching game mechanics. It has been a challenge to re-evaluate our game and define it once and for all but we feel like we’re getting closer and are remaining positive.

Talking to the mentors was amazing! Before the meeting I know I was a little scared to meet all our mentors at once but they were really calming and insightful. They really gave us a lot of necessary feedback to improve our project and got us re-considering important questions like…

What platform are we going to use?

Should the mechanics be decided before the narrative? (Spoiler! Yes)

What art style appeals to a large age demographic?

And these are just some of the thought-provoking questions they gave us.

So for this week, we decided to take their advice and try and get those pesky game mechanics sorted! “How?” you might ask. By doing the best research possible and playing a lot of games. Me and Gina played a variety of co-op games like ‘It Takes Two’ and after we decided mobile was our preferred platform, we looked into Android/iOS games for inspiration. This was incredibly fun and gave us a lot of great references.

As we’re learning more about our project, we’re continuing to refine our work plan and are keeping up to date with our tasks thanks to our project management system Jira.

What we’re working on/what’s not working

    • Establishing co-op game mechanics

    How we’re feeling

    • I’m excited and eager to start creating but there has been a little bit of frustration as we continue to decide on the mechanics. We don’t want to rush it but we also don’t want to fall behind so we’re trying to establish the right balance.

    • I think the meeting with the mentors has highlighted the importance of discussion and I plan on asking questions whenever possible to mentors and fellow/previous finalists to learn from their workflow and to build a support network.

    • I think the upcoming tribe advisor’s meeting will be a great opportunity for more useful feedback and I can’t wait to meet everyone there!

That's all for this week. Thanks for reading!

  • So it begins.

Adrián here! Our first week for the garden of monsters at STL has been a busy one already, but really exciting. So let's summarize the highlights!

This has been a week of rethinking. We have been working around what to enhance and what to cut, what is good enough to make it more important and what isn't helping to tell the story. This week we had our first meeting with Kris Pearn, and it was amazing! Kris is so nice and we love his energy. Also, he was very anthusiastic about our project, so that gave us confidence and helped us reaffirm that we have a good project on our hands. We discussed about the story and characters, and we ended up having a lot of ideas to work with. I am the one that has been making the main development of story and characters' writing, so it's a lot of fuel for my brain!

Pablo has been working also on writing down some ideas, but his main task has been to explore around characters, monsters and all that stuff. First of all, he has made some explorations on how monsters get withered. Here are some examples:

Also, he has begun to work on the main characters' designs. We basically discussed some ideas around story and characters, but we also agreed the objectives for the STL, the schedule and all that stuff, so now we have a clear path. We are very excited to share it with all our mentors this thursday and see what they think about it. Oh, and, of course, to meet them, because for now, we have just met Kris.

So that's all for now, folks! If I have time enough, I would like to make a quick update this week before the big one next monday, so I can share with you some of the ideas I'm developing right now with the seeds that Kris planted in our first session. Until then, have a nice week!

  • WEEK 01 - DISCOVERY WEEK

During our first week with the THU team, the mentors and the other finalists, we discovered a lot of tools and received a lot of information. A little under pressure because we were discovering a new world but we were able to get by anyway. we were able to set up an action plan, how to make the transition between live action and 2D thanks to the advice of our main mentor JINKO GOTOH (to whom we gave the nickname of Ablah Pokou, the mother of the Baoulé people Ivorian. We will explain the story to you later 🙃). We had a clearer idea of our deliverable, eliminating certain aspects that may go beyond our skills. We've listed all the ideas and rated them, so you know what to do now and what can wait after. we now have tools that will allow us to test our ideas, how to make a prototype thanks to the advice of KEVIN YOUNG.

We were able to find through many searches to find a good reference image bank and inspiring videos. We took the opportunity to do some English lessons too! (even if the text has been translated online 😄 but we will get there step by step).

it was a hard but very rich week for the start of this adventure.

One last thing, our main mentor (JINKO GOTOH) said she loves our project, we are so proud of it. 🥰🥳

  • Week One - And so... the adventure begins!

What a week! Ephan and I had a very hectic, but insightful week. We dedicated this time to researching and settling into our new journey!

Our main goal for this week was figuring out our game mechanics. Our game is a co-op where player 1 is learning English, and player 2 is learning Cantonese, so we wanted to think about a way we could do this where it was still fun and engaging. We were brainstorming solutions on how to integrate game mechanics with our narrative/story and language learning elements seamlessly.

We researched and looked into videos on YouTube and articles online. We looked into what game mechanics are, looked at similar games and made bullet points of what we liked about each of them, looked into language learning techniques (we particularly liked Stephen Krashen’s theory on language acquisition–how it’s more effective for people to learn a language via visual cues or context and we plan on implementing his strategies into our game).

We also thought about our story and fleshed out more of our characters. I found Coursera’s CalArts: Story and Narrative Development for Video Games to be extremely helpful. The course talked about strategies for creating ideas (the game goals, protagonists/antagonists, levels ideas) and gave examples on character briefs and what a game synopsis could look like. It mentioned that a story should have a spine–which is the primary theme of the story, and rising action, and that a story can be split into three acts–the set up, confrontation, and resolution. This was all really helpful while ideating our story.

We also had a very insightful session with Andrew! We pitched our current story to him, and he suggested making the game’s value to be about teaching/reminding players the value of communication and how it helps people feel seen. We both really found this helpful in coming up with our story, and making sure that new ideas tied in with our theme.

We also defined our deliverable. In our session with Kevin, he mentioned the idea of a “vertical slice of cake,” which was helpful, and also made Ephan hungry. We told Andrew that we plan on having a playable demo where players can get a sense of the game mechanics, story, and value.

This week, we also started hammering down our work plan. Tasks will definitely change as our journey progresses, and there will definitely be a lot of iterations and back-and-forth, but currently I’ve divided our time into 3 periods: pre-production (planning), production (the art needed for the minimum viable product), and “post-production” (basically making all the art pretty, like adding textures and potentially VFX).

We believe we’ve figured out our game mechanics and have a story going, which we’re looking forward to sharing with you tomorrow for feedback.

    How we’re feeling:

Gina: I’m feeling slightly overwhelmed haha. There’s a lot of information to process and a lot of stuff to work out, but it’s understandable at this early stage. I’m not much of a gamer–at least, not anymore. I used to be obsessed with MapleStory (if anyone else here is a Mapler…let me know) but now I mainly just play Mario Kart haha. I learned a lot about games this past week and was surprised how much decision making went into it! The game mechanics, narrative design, UI, sound–everything pieces together into one cohesive theme. I feel like I’m learning a lot about games, and it’s exciting because at the same time, I get to apply it into practice for this project while being mentored by industry experts! I’m also looking forward to getting to know the other finalists better, and meeting everyone in-person in Spain! Although this journey will definitely come with its own set of challenges, I’m so excited to learn & grow and work on Don Don with my best friend!!

Ephan: I felt a bit surprised to see the direction of our concept slightly shift as we learnt more about game design, language learning and narrative writing. I am also really excited to develop some of the concepts that we discussed. I believe we’ve created a really fun story with interesting mechanics. I’m a little nervous but excited to receive feedback from our mentors tomorrow so we can really fine-tune our project.

    –

Phew! Hopefully that wasn't too much haha. That's all for now. We'll see you soon! :)

  • Week One: Food for Thought

Hello! Welcome! Thank you for coming here as I document my journey with Sony Talent League.

The seed for the story of Siu Lan and the Adventures of Magic Cookbook began with a recipe, so today I will share with you a “recipe” I will take with me in the coming weeks.

Before I get into the recipe, I wanted to share some happenings in my week. In the first week of working on my project, I had the pleasure of learning to focus my ideas, so they benefit the current state of the story. This was done by identifying a thesis that will be used to shape the components beyond the series. This learning reminded me of the phrase, “take one thing at a time.” I have had to remind myself of this phrase many times in life. If you ask me how I feel, I’d say excited, curious, open, and probably hungry.

This week I am finalizing what I will be presenting in my final pitch and getting to meet my mentors. If I were to rate my eagerness to learn on a scale of 1 to 10, I’d say 1,247/10.

If you have read this far, you might think, “Where is this recipe?” It is coming, promise! By the way, this isn’t a recipe for banana bread. This is a recipe of values I will keep in my back pocket to pull out when I feel doubt about my abilities. For me, the opposite of doubt is trust. So, this is a recipe for: Trust.

    A recipe for trust

    ½ cup of self-care
Place doubtful thoughts in the oven for 24 hours
1 tsp of identifying my feelings
    A dash of self-compassion
1 cup of reminder that unknowns can be turned into questions

That's it for now! I am very excited to share my journey as the weeks go by.

So one of the first things we had to do is setting up a shared Drive folder, a Docs document we can both write things in and most importantly a Miro project, where we can visually display all our ideas on a massive digital whiteboard.

Our shared Miro page to collect and brainstorm ideas.

Even though we already had some ideas in common that we liked it was quite hard to put them in order, so on Tuesday Kevin Young, our main mentor, helped us to put those ideas into smaller sections, which we then can more easily focus on and explained some strategies he likes to use for his own projects.

We clarified that during the “discovery stage” of our project, which we are in at the moment, we mainly have to focus on 4 core question marks that need to be turned into exclamation marks:

-

Story
- Aesthetics
- Mechanics
- Technology

To be able to dig deeper and start prototyping for our interactive VR story we first needed to get one obstacle out of the way. We didn’t own a VR headset. So after some research and sending a ton of requests to people online we got ourselves a headset. We picked it up on wednesday and now we were able to try anything we could imagine in the huge world of virtual reality.

Mapo and the baby

Thursday and Friday we focused on two main things, writing concepts for the story of our immersive VR experience and and prototyping first mechanics for the navigaiton within the VR world.

Andrey in the VR world.

Sebastian testing out VR drawing softwares.
