Pre-Production

Week 3.

In the third week of the journey to our immersive VR experience we have officially stepped into the phase of pre-production. After doing a lot of research and looking for a ton of references in the past few weeks we have now started to work on concepts and designs for both the characters, as well as the background of the first chapter of our story.

Concerning the characters we mainly have focused on the main one for now, which is the deaf old man from the mountains. For his design we want to highlight empathy and calmness combined with a mysterious touch. Even though he is very old and a bit weak he still has enough will to climb the top of a mountain with us.

Character Design Concepts.

After many different designs we finally settled on one, for which we then added more details and color. As the next step we will build a first 3D model of it, which we will later give a rig to be able to animate it.

Character Design of the old man in different colors.

Besides the character design we also started to work on drafts for the background. Drawn in simple gray shadings for now we are aiming for a beautiful and cozy, yet mystical vibe for our campsite in the middle of the mountains. Once we find a design that we both like we will start modeling a first 3D prototype of the scene in VR.

Background Design Concepts.

In addition to that, we have successfully added the first few signs of American Sign Language to our little “dictionary” in Unity, which the viewer will be taught throughout the game.

List of working Signs in ASL in Unity.

Amazing progress, you guys! Really excited to see everything visually start to come to life. :) In the story, are communicating with the old man with hand signs? If so, maybe we can consider making his hands bigger in terms of the design? We can discuss more when we meet tomorrow. Thank you for keeping us all updated!

Thanks for the detailed update...so exciting to start to see visuals coming together. Really nice character design! Similar to Erick's comment - curious about the readability of poses given the size and shape of his hands. Likewise the tone and shape of the beard as bg to gestures. Looking forward to catching up this week.

I love the character, and the background is beautiful. I can't wait to learn these words in the prototype soon :D

Thanks for this update, really nice visual development. The old man has an appealing design - as others have said, reconsider the proportions of his hands for readability. Likewise, ensure the colours of his jacket give his arms enough contrast (colour and value of his sleeves) as this will also help the viewer track gestures and movement better.

Really good discipline to start with value studies of the environment, in 2D to explore the major shapes. Before you move onto modelling, consider creating the equivalent spatial sketch in Quill or Open Brush/Tilt Brush as this will help you rapidly prototype and solve challenges in scale natively in a spatial format. Will save you a lot of time in the long run with modelling final assets. Quill in particular enables you to explore variations and make big alterations, fast!

Topics for our upcoming 1:1 mentoring call
    - have you wireframed the user journey yet?
    - have you outlined the essential narrative beats from start to end?
    - have you arrived at the finite list of words/vocabulary yet?

Productive chat in our 1:1 mentorship call today.

After our discussion, I sketched out some quick lines that might sum up the point you're trying to make with the story:

Silence. A stunning and powerful beauty,
Peaceful bliss and harmony are its only duty.
A silent stillness that fills this space,
The beauty of silence is a warm embrace.

A gentle calm that washes over the soul,
A moment of tranquility to behold.
No words needed, no noise to be heard,
Just the beauty of silence; a world unstirred.

A moment of stillness so refreshing and pure,
A place of renewal, serene and sure.
The beauty of silence, fragile and sweet,
A beauty you've found at the soles of your feet.

To a def person, I imagine this reads like the perspective of someone who isn't def. Would be interesting to find out if that's the case.

Watched Coda again last night and one of the things that struck me was how effective s signs accompanied by humor were at generating empathy and conveying story. Curious if there's room to think about tone and emotional beats.
