Initial Idea
the basic idea I had is a partitioned society
Alright, here we have some answers to our questions.
Finishing this wasnt easy for me, because there is still so much i would like to change but i think this is it.
Having the child in the midground here to pull your eyes to the mysterious power and not get lost in the crowd was essential (got really important feedback on this from inkognit)
First time i challenged myself with a huge Illustration something like this and i learned a ton (mostly that i have to do so much more).
These 2 images show a stage where i thought i did settle pretty much everything.
took my eyes off for a few days and came back to it.
I enhanced the costume of the main character to make it more "interesting" and make him a "special", because he is, he is the chosen one with the Golden Ticket.
But something still was missing, i liked the overall compostion but my eyes were jumping all over the place and what were these pillars really doing anyway?
In my first sketch i was planning on a cloudy and overcast lighting situation, becuase i already was planning that the pillars of connection are gonna spark in some way, so they pop more.
But doing a very rough color pass, I thought that a warm sunset is gonna really make the felling of the scene so much more enjoyable and interesting.
So i did some expoloration on colours and kept it very dark in the early stages.
Slow and steady ha ha ha ... (took me ages)
After setting the rough layout of my compostion, i was wondering what the new way of connection looks like.
I was going way sci-fi with the first ones and i thought to myslef, why go so overboard with these.
When we can relate to it much more when we take extisting shapes and slighty change it to make it more interesting.
So i went and took a "ordinary" overhead power line and changed it up so it fits this world.
After debating and getting to like one of my Ideas of this compositon of the main character and many other people looking to a mysterious but very powerful and interesting Pillar that connects everything in a new way, i was playing with perspective, really liked it that we emphasize more with the main character when he faces away from us. like we are all sitting/standing there and wondering about the future.
This was my playing field in the first hour or two.
Okay i wrote some random words onto a piece of paper first, but my visual exploration started here.
My Main Keywords for the challenge really were "change" "mysterious" "wonder" "looking ahead".
All these words connect for me with the word Change and going into an unknown future.
We all wonder and we all look into the future with a bit of a mysterious eye.
I wish everyone the best of luck! Seeing the work of every artist served as an enormous source of motivation and inspiration for me. The experience was invaluable for me as a beginning artist and I'd want to thank THU for giving me the chance to participate in Golden Ticket 2022.
I modeled the icebergs and played with textures...
Imagine you have a small locket that when opened, shows the most secluded places on Earth as virtual reality. The avatar of an Amur leopard is your guide within the game. Wear your headset & transport to one of the levels. Is it fighting illegal whaling in the Southern Ocean - a campaign inspired by Sea Shepherd's heroic actions? You've created here your own community and friendships with other players while chasing down the poachers. How about exercising your problem-solving skills while intervening against a coal mine construction that destroys the Great Barrier Reef and produces greenhouse gas emissions? What kind of adventure would bring a spiritual and educational expedition to the Amazon Rainforest? Would a feeling of oneness with nature make us take bigger actions against deforestation?
This is a quick summary of the whole image from start to finish. It was an incredible journey to be a part of THU (It's my first time here), and it was a huge inspiration to see all different artist visions/ truly a new learning experience for me. Here are my full concept and sketches I have done previously before the final image. Through the use of 3D, Texture UV mapping/rendering, Digital Sketch, and Full on Digital painting.
The Amur leopard is one of the most endangered species and 'is important ecologically, economically & culturally'. I've chosen it as a guide within the game because it's threatened by poaching, climate change and habitat loss – the problems that are being addressed within the game. The more successful actions we take within the campaigns, the more our furry companion grows. With no action, it dies with time.
‘'If a factory is torn down but the rationality that produced it is left standing then that rationality simply will produce another factory.’’ Robert Pirsing
Environmental problems can’t be addressed by science and design on their own. The lasting change can only come through the cultural and spiritual transformation of the masses. The real change must start on an emotional level through experience. Technology won't make sustainability effective if selfishness and greed stay at our core.
Being raised in the early 90s I remember both worlds prior and after the internet revolution. Summer holidays in nature without phones and the excitement of the first computer games. I recall being puzzled why my childhood friend was so attached to an egg-shaped toy with a virtual pet inside- a birthday present from her parents. I was impressed by how disciplined she was when it came to its feeding schedule.
Only a decade later I realised how big of an impact technology has on people's behavior.
