  • Process - Characters

I wanted to feature an Astronaut and an Alien, both with striking differences, coming together for a game of Chess- rather playful.

In the future that I envision, differences no longer bound people. Everyone co-exists in harmony, putting their differences aside. Staying connected helps them acheive this, and distance is no longer an issue.

  • first sketches

Starting with small thumbnails to quickly capture the ideas and possible compositions, old-school pen on paper. I like the idea of someone with a flare or torch (like the Olypic athletes), taking a jump from a cliff, but not falling down and keep running instead.

I like both the side view and the one where we can see the character back, but decided for the side view where it's more obvious that he is in the air and not falling down to the ocean.

  • Process - Background

I decided that outer-space would be a fitting background for a futuristic concept like this one. Apart from representing the vast possibilites, it also illustrates how far humans have come towards a different kind of civilization- one that is quite out-of-this-world.

  • Progress Post Nr 5 - Tentacle Tuesday, except it's Sunday ahah

So this is how it is going, these bridges are being " complicated" because I feel like they look like tentacles and I don not like it ahah not amused at all. I feel like the colors and mood are going in the direction I want, there is no sense of light yet, i know but I want to take care of my elements first and them figure that out. Also, the crown on the character on the back is trowing me off so,... idk what to do with that.
I think these texts might be a bit confusing and probably not very explanatory but I am trying. Also I will keep up with the weird tittles because they make me laugh and hope that doesn't seem like I am not taking this challenge seriously, I just want to have fun along the way :D

  • Rough draft

The idea of an advanced communication system, as a result of newer technologies, is very fascinating, Having researched a bit about 5G, I came to know how it contributes to a greater and more enhanced Virtual Reality (VR) experience. I wanted to explore this concept by introducing a whimsical scenario.

  • The New Brave World

In this brave new world humanity is not restricted to a specific place or a city. People can travel to different parts of the continent using their electronic caravans.Because of 5G internet people can earn and lear while they are travelling. In this world menial work is done by machines, which leaves us to creative professions. These are developed sponge cities which are built on modular structures and vertical automated farming. Drones are used for delivering and assisting, smart tech is now a basic necessity for evry individual. Ar and Vr gadgets are used for all kinds of tasks from education to entertainment.
There is the word brave in the tile because humans have broken the boundaries of their familiar spaces and are venturing into new and unfamiliar spaces and places, which we all want to do and we can do. We just need to foster some more courage!

  • Envisioning the Sustainable Present

Finnaly while fleshing out this artwork I tried to give it narrative. By adding augmented reality dialogue boxes. The scene is happening while the sun is setting and a family has shifted to their new house in a different city.

In this stage I was trying to visualise the environment and how it will be structured. Modular houses, green infrastructure and sponge city scape were the main words floating in my mind while visualising.

  • Humanity part 12 (Dome)

In order for humans to survive in Outerspace, I created Domes on top of the trees that are used for the inhabitants to work and live. Because the people cannot live on Earth anymore they needed to find a greener and sufficient place to live because the Earth is very contaminated, so the TreeDomes act as a home for both people and animals. In the Domes, they are set to the correct atmosphere quality, making them easily breathable for people and animals to breathe. In one of the Domes, I created farmland where farmers could grow fresh crops for people to harvest and return to their homes. If people wanted to enjoy watching nature up close but not disturbing the animals they could travel to the Nature Dome and watch the beauty of nature up close. The Domes act as habitable places for people to travel to if they need to conduct business or take a break from everything.

  • Humannity Part 11 (Animals)

Animals can make great pets and are great companions. Animals help to bring out the best in people, whenever we are sad they do their best to make us feel happy again. Another reason what makes animals great is they always have a sense of energy to play with us and they always want to cheer us on. There are even some animals that are trained to handle people who have different disabilities and it is their job to help calm the person down or help them to travel from place to place. If something is wrong they are able to sense it really quick and do whatever they can to help us stay happy. To add to the composition I decided to add a robot dog as a companion for the two characters. The dog is there to help and assist his friends whenever they need anything.

  • A new day

When I imagine a sustainable future I don't picture massive maga cities but small communities working collaboratively.
For me sustainability incorporates a harmony with nature. I was inspired by the copious lavendar plants dotting the landscape surrounding my home, populated by bees in a living ecosystem.
From this reference, my agents of change are working together to both care for the local environement and setup new communication technology that keeps us all connected.

In my initial sketch I've incorporated the lavender and bee hives atop a natural high point. The new antenna being setup is supposed to be more visually appealing opposed to the towering masts of today.
For the surrounding landscape I want to showcase the small towns and villages nestled into the valley. Hopefully I can make it look cosy in the final painting!
I'm trying to avoid a standard daytime lighting setup, though I will need to make sure that the piece doesn't feel too dark or uninviting.

Enjoying the process, looking forward to colour next!

  • Step 03 Drawing the characters

I struggled a lot with how to put the characters in the shot so that they looked organic and fit into the composition, and at the same time there was no feeling that they did not know each other at all 😑

It should be immediately clear that they know each other well and work as a team. I don’t know how I managed it in the end, but I tried my best :D

  • The Process

<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>Now we are in another phase of exploration. We defined that the ocean would be the main element of this drawing. Now to the composition. <br> <br> I decided to make it so the 5G was <s><em>"hidden" </em></s> in plain sight. I took inspiration from the Google logos where they always find a way to spell out Google in the most various shapes and colors to celebrate a specific date or theme.</p> <p> </p> <p>As such- I decided that the humpback whale would be diving down deeper into the ocean and the curvature of their body would spell out the G. It was challenging to get the pose to look fluid and also natural but at the same time allow some of the liberties of art to bend the body as much as it needed to form the G.<br> <br> Then came drawing the girl. At first I decided to draw in a more children illustration style. I wanted the girl to be wearing VR googles, showing that despite the intimate contact she's having with the humpback whale, she's still somewhere else and the whale is free in the wild. </p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"> <div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBdXFFIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--96d1e73e0dccb53612d0b1b8766df54a4a80fe37/IMG_1631.PNG"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBdXFFIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--96d1e73e0dccb53612d0b1b8766df54a4a80fe37/IMG_1631.PNG"></a></div></div> <p>  </p> </div> <p> </p> <p>I redrew the girl again because I decided to go with a more realistic style of proportions. I made her pose more "floaty" so she would really feel weightless. This pose also feels more dynamic and really allows people to see her VR set properly. </p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBdXVFIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--4c30f19d6fdf54d685ff17b3b3c398bbf07e47dd/IMG_1633.PNG"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBdXVFIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--4c30f19d6fdf54d685ff17b3b3c398bbf07e47dd/IMG_1633.PNG"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>The back ground first started in blue tones with a slight gradient and textures to make it more lively, but I thought it didn't really pop out truly. I wanted it to be more dramatic, as if the girl was looking up at some other environment even. I also really wanted the diference between the surface and the bottom of the ocean to be noticiable.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBdXlFIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--0b47a75eebb07af15071f1decd5794a5d107bdae/IMG_1634.PNG"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBdXlFIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--0b47a75eebb07af15071f1decd5794a5d107bdae/IMG_1634.PNG"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p><br> After that, I painted both the girl and the humpback whale. I used more smooth tones on the girl since the skin would be smooth and the light would softly illuminate it. In regards to the whale I used a lot of textures to really make it look natural since their beautiful skin is really full of patterns and colors. </p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBdTJFIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--7b975e9ec3e15ea7d56671f86ab3607d7d1aff15/IMG_1635.PNG"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBdTJFIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--7b975e9ec3e15ea7d56671f86ab3607d7d1aff15/IMG_1635.PNG"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>Finally the 5 of the 5G I hid in the texture of the foam and bubbles of the ocean and movement. I didn't want either the 5 or the G to be too obvious but I wanted the eye to naturally understand they were there but not upset the composition. </p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBdTZFIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--113f9ac368200f713b78f29e8ab2270c59c98c7d/IMG_1636.PNG"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBdTZFIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--113f9ac368200f713b78f29e8ab2270c59c98c7d/IMG_1636.PNG"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>And that's how I came to the final piece I'll post next. The over all process was incredibly fun to work on. I always find it fun to review the whole process after I've finished the piece because it's almost like a little domino effect. One decision led to another, one inspiration led to another, and one idea resulted in a full artwork. </p> <p> </p> <p>I used Procreate on an Ipad to work on this piece from concept to finished artwork.</p> <p> </p> <p><br> I hope you enjoyed reading about my process as much as I had explaining it! </p> <p> </p> </div>

After choosing a design for the spacestation and a composition sketch that worked I moved on to actually making a complete sketch for the illustration. Things are coming together! I addeda sense of depth with overlapping elements like the character in the foregrounds hand and the spacestation, the character with the camera and the moon and the spaceship and earth.
