Thinking about material and spatial needs. Frame needs to be light - titanium? Circulation needed for maintenance and vehicular (Bicycle!) travel. An aesthetic of material preservation - building only the structures necessary to meet circulation and mechanical needs...

People are social beings, and all generations have a common part - communication. Communication and connection in the data level are the main bases of the illustration. 

5G – the latest generation… Connected devices, can you imagine how they are important in our daily life? Based on these connections, a sustainable future is in our hands. This generation has a very broad effect in many areas: education, agriculture, industry, science, etc. I wanted to show these areas in characters: HOW SILICON BECOMES SOLUTION, how small data changes our lives in a sustainable way…

Ps. This is the beginning of the coloring process. More details come to my mind while working on colors :)

My project is dedicated to showing how small particles make big changes and solutions in our life.

Before creating the illustration, I turned on my left brain and started to explore what are 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G in science and what they gave us. I have tried to touch all generations and some purposes of them and their evolution quickly. It was a huge innovation for mankind. That’s the main part of how my idea came to my mind.  But I mainly focused on some of the functions of 5G technology and its life-changing impact on us.

As I have found from the research, 5G electronics mainly are made from silicon. So, I decided to use it for my 5G characters project name.

Based on this knowledge my right brain turns on. Data is our main thing. I have created 5 characters as DATA TRANSFER AGENTS – AGENTS OF CHANGES.

Ps. This is a rough sketch of my ideas, I'll give more details.

In the works :) 

A rural village in Punjab is my setting. I wanted to show how 5G was able to give access fast connections to rural areas and how the rural areas could benefit from those connections.

First panel - girl looking at phone. Everytime we hear about 5G, it is related to our phones and the enhanced speed of our mobile data. Great change right at your fingertips.

Second panel - girl with VR glasses. Virtual Reality is a part of our lives and the arrival of 5G will only make it better. A new reality in a blink of an eye.

Colourful neons - the future is bright/ NOS circular logo.

Materials - Colouring pencils, white pigment gel pen, and HB-6B pencils on Bristol Board paper.

With this sketch now I know the type of direction I want to go and the places where I am goin to put even more detail, like the legs of one of the babies, which is a kinda of a plant mutation.

Now it is time to color for the final product. 

Still have to balance out the tone on the foreground.

My eyes can't see anything anymore. I'm losing my mind. 

After some color shifts and composition tuning i started laying in some textures and added the city mockup I made earlier in blender.

At this point The piece was still very bare bones and some of the main design elements and focus of the piece were still missing, like the drones the wild life and the kids/ holograms.

I was going for a more eliptical read with most of the elements near the corners of the picture.

The second character needs to be the representation of young people discovering new things in a world where indigenous people were able to build their community and show their identity also in their clothes.

Rough linework of the network 'superstructure'... gonna try things differently this time and finish this layer of linework in blender.

When I read the Challenge theme, the idea that came to my mind was about the connection between the old and the new generations. Where the respect for the wisdom of the ancients guides and protects the actions of the young people, giving them the freedom and space to experiment and discover the elements that will change the world. 

I started working first on the central character of my piece - the one who has lived the longest, and because of that, she has the wisdom and knowledge that others can access through the fast connections on which the world is based.

So continuing my last post,

I landed on this idea of a landscape painting depicting connections between humans, nature, animals possible trough 5g.

After exploring a bit of composition and colors trough thumbnailing ,i went with a vibrant depiction of a city  in the distance being watched by friends linked through holograms, i also tought about how there could be sort of friendly sattelites, that helped civilization mantain a healthy world by monitoring wild life as well as weather.

i started exploring blender a bit to try and get a base for the city before comitting to the painting.

the design of these drones was still a mistery for me at the time.

I've finally completed the first soldier shading. I'm a bit excited to start working on the background lighting and to see all coming together and fix any problems that might apear.

Thinking about architecture and space in relation to an age of hyper connection AND ecological revival: so we have 5, 6, 7, 8G. Super fast connection. Augmented reality, accelerated reality, apex reality... in any sense, a hyper immersive digital environment. So all this needs a lot of energy. And perhaps we develop some sort of solar panel-ish device that is, by assumption of a holistic advancement of technologies, a lot better than the solar panels we have today. Conventionally we'd put these PVs somewhere in the dessert, where there is a lot of sun and land is easy to procure. But let's consider the ECOLOGICAL perspective. Imagine we are in an age of ecological revival where biodiversity catches back up into all forms of alien-looking forests, but after we in 2022 have already caused irreversible climate change and damage to the ozone layer. (plus the fact that it is not wholly ethical or ecological to simply build solar energy devices where there is a desert and transfer that energy across two continents to people's homes) So perhaps there is a lot of sun everywhere BUT there is also a strong consensus to not disturb the land for something so homogenous and in fact quite dead as a solar farm. So where do all these PVs go? To the sky. Held by hot-air balloons, made to orient toward the strongest sunlight. And we need so many of them to support the 8G network that they actually become some sort of micro-city in the sky themselves. And with the meagre weight-holding capacity of the hot-air balloons these panels hold some pontoons underneath to collect rainwater, and use that rainwater to cool down their systems - a closed loop material cycle. In the end these PVs become some kind of augmented landscape - an artificial silver lining by the edge of the sky, occassionally discharging a small waterfall onto vast stretches of restored forests - where people also happen to live in the future. And here is how the prompt of 'imagine a 5G and sustainable society' leads to the design of airborne architecture... 

Regarding the picture, I'm detailing the initial sketch.

At this stage a tried to create a story, and then did some thumbnails trying to communicate it visually.

The base idea was to represent an astronaut in a space capsule placed in a diferente planet, doing a video call (using 5G) with is family that was on earth.

added stronger light, I am not sure if it is actually better than the previous stage though :D

The disaster scene of a meteor strike. The two talking people are portrayed in a different colour 'see-through' linestyle and massively out of proportion to suggest the fact that they are communicating in a digital space - whilst having sensorial access to all the physical site of incidence.

The purpose of the red circles is to show at a human scale the synthesis of physical maintenance to the ecosystem aided by digital connections... needs re-iteration as it is currently just 'conference-like'. The aim is to portray the massive physical construction needed to support a 'cloud' way of living and collaborating... which needs to be both ambitious and considerate to the existing cycles of materials and ecological exchanges.

The storyboard sketch... colour-adjusted and scaled to be printed as the back-plate for a more serious pencil sketch. Stay tuned...

In the hypothetical city-of-the-future, infrastructure serves no longer as a physical addition to the flow of materials but rather of information. The new human sits with her body in the restored eco-system whilst her mind participates in the maintenance of her physical environment - in the cloud. The physical city continues to ammend and upkeep itself through the aid of instantaneous collaboration on-line... and advancement does not come at the cost of sacrificing what's already there.

Recently humans have invented organic computers. This allowed the plants to "revive". Flora has the opportunity to openly interact with the outside world. By combining plants wuth new technology, people have recieved indispensable helpers and companions.

The basis of the new life was the discovery of the internal energy of the Earth, which is the "fuel" for all living organisms. It flows like blood through the veins forming an invisible network. The old technology helped curb it, with the help of which it turned put to direct the flows. 

Everyone has a home gennerator that converts new energy into visible streams that are convenient for use. Each item has a reciver capable of capturing the energy. Besides, people began to use animals as transmitters. This allowed to increase the coverage of the network and if you have a tamed crow, for example, then you are fully provided with energy. These transmitters do not interfere with animals at all. On the contrary, they allow a more in-depth study of the animal world.

Also people realized that it is not necessary to create artificial materials, but you can simply grow them.

Now with all the characters in the painting, I started worrying more about the shading and lighting part of things,

After having picked the colors, and adding the extra characters, I tried to fit them better in the compostion in terms of color and tone. So I went over the character with a soft brush with sligthly purple tint and making it a multiply layer, so it harmonizes better with the pallette set by the background and local colors.

I noticed the smartphone that the girl is holding was a bit too hiden in the darkness, so it wasn't clear what they were looking at. This was mostly fixed by adding a lightsource to it's screen, also added a purple tint to it so it differs more from the light's coming from the umbrella. Also helps adding more to the focus point of the composition.
