How would an average person fare in a world rendered uninhabitable? We already see many disparities in living conditions around the world. What's normal for some is unimaginable for another.
So what if life headed towards the end of the world was normal? I tried to sketch out a post-apocalyptic world where nothing is normal and yet people keep going.
Just before colour correction
After very very very long hours of overpainting, here's the *almost* final result. Now what's left to do is some Photoshop magic to get rid of the darkest darks and increase clarity in general.
This was very fun but above all I've learnt so much about workflow - for example, I could have gotten rid of my many layers much much earlier because it's so much easier to overpaint over everything. It also eneded up being the most complex image I've ever made and figuring out what lighting and materials rules to break for composition and clarity sake was an essential part of it. I feel it looks quite convincing overall tho!
Part 3 - Lighting and Presentation

Inspiration

I've been heavily inspired by traditional sculpture for this project, particularly the work of
Jana Büttne
r and
Peter Reuterberg
. Although this scene is full of tension on screen, it's the lighting that stood out to me. I used this website to study some frames from the film.

I love how the characters are clear and silhouetted in the frame with just one or two light sources cutting through the fog, rain and water. The sense of an endless void beyond the frame made me think of that creative and focussed state that inspired this project. My Oasis is always in small things. Small moments, like sitting under a tree or reading a book, but also (mostly) small objects. I love tiny bits and pieces I find in nature, like snail houses, tree nuts or little twigs that look like a mini version of a perfect big tree :)
