  • Aurum Lentis : the soldiers resting place (NON-FINAL Option 1 )

For this option I focused on softer colors and more emphasis on the storytelling.
I wanted to maintain a sense of serenity and calm along with greatness.

Overpaint done in Photoshop mainly with brushes and minor photobash.

Upon picking my 2 favourite thumbnails, I went on Blender and started building the scene.
After making a quick render I started doing some color adjustments before doing any overpaint

  • Aurum Lentis : the soldiers resting place (Sketches)

In the first phase I began searching for references regarding the concept of a vertical spa, I ended up stumbling upon an idea I already had in mind about a safe haven with natural pools in an unusual vertical formation.

Afterwards i hopped on Photoshop and made some quick thumbnails.

  • Inicial sketches and concept exploration

I grew up in a big family, and in my grandma's house, there was always room for one more at the table, as they say. The only requirement was to eat, drink and have a good time, the rest didn't matter. The version of my personal oasis is a bit of that but in a bigger scale. It is a place where we can acept and recognize each other and look past our differences, a place where we can be together free of judgement, and boxes to fit into. It's a place where we aren't fighting with each other but instead working together in new adventures, new discoveries and new frontiers. A place that is close to nature and we take care of our planet, but at the same time with our eyes in the stars to reach new places and keep dreaming. That is my oasis. This inicial stage I started to form the ideia, the characters and and the overall mood. Started to do some rough thumbnails to work on a composition and then moved to a more polished version to start to work on some characters. There is still much work to be done, but for now, I'm having a blast imagining all kinds of people, creatures and beings to fill this table.

  • Grass and Foliage

To achieve the stylized look I aim for, I modeled both the grass and flowers using mesh planes. After finishing the objects, I duplicated them and flipped the normals on one set, effectively creating a two-sided material. I used Blender for modeling and Illustrator for creating the flower texture. To make this flowers more special to me, i modeled and texture them using flowers from my garden as a reference.

I wanted to add my own personal touch to this oasis by making it Afrofuturist. so I chose to work with warm colours like those found in some episodes of the Kizazi Moto series.

Hello everyone, I'm taking up the challenge!
To respond to the theme, I've decided to work on a universe in which people can no longer go outside because of a sudden change in climate. So they find themselves trapped in their homes, which pushes them to develop their links with robots.

  • La Mezcla

So my project started as random lines that I made in my sketch book, and from them, I drew the figures and shapes that I saw.

After that, I took this photo that I submitted here, and uploaded it into my "drawing app" Procreate, where I made the outlines, coloring, shading and a few changes. I have a video of the process but unfortunately I can only upload photos.

  • 3. Experiments and Textures

In my opinion the depicition of a both tangible element in the woods as well as place that can exist only in your head requires a new and experimental approach. That´s why I collected different materials, paint and textures to try how a more natural approach could mimic the natural structures I was trying to depict in my thumbnails (see former post 2. First paintings and thumbnails). Having tried a range of materials I am feeling comfortable with, a range of linoleum and graphite experiments can be processed and condensed into a final image with a digital finish. Onward it goes!

While studying the forms of brick being stacked together, I was thinking a lot about the vanity of the brick hut. A brick hut is not something built for eternity, it might need maintance after any small meteorological event and might not even survive a windy thunderstorm. A forest fire takes it apart, even animals or humans might take it apart to build a new den somewhere else.

Then again the brick hut is not necessarily something tangible, it can be a symbol for a mind palace, a psychic refuge. Even there the brick hut is not everlasting, you might need it to take shelter from a storm in your life but then it might get forgotten again. Just like the people building these in the vienna forest stopped building these as soon as the pandemy started to fade.

This focus on its abstract qualities make the brick hut into a highly charged symbolic element to me, which I think needs a different approach than my normal rather slick finish of the everyday illustrations I have to deliver to clients. Onward to an experimental approach!

  • 1. Research and reference - The primitive hut

During the covid pandemic I used to make long walks in the forest - not much else to do. So did everybody else. The vienna forest was full of people who probably would not normally hike but everybody was enjoying the calming effect of nature in contrast to the chaos and uncertainty of the pandemic.

I noticed these little huts made of branches appear all over the forest at the same time. It felt like the people building them tried to capture the feeling of safety and calmness. They build their own little safe haven in a sea of trees - their personal oasis.

This is my starting point for the concept of my "Primitive Hut Oasis Project" (PHOP), I felt quite inspired by these structures (which in meantime after the pandemic faded out began falling appart in the forest without new ones being built). Following the PHOP I think that the concept of personal oasis is very close to our primal needs and whishes. Even clouded by all the colourful and flashy inputs and by our evergrowing desire to achieve and own more and more complex things in the end it all comes back to very basic needs - safety, personal space (which during COVID was essential as the danger was out there) and molding matter and space in accord with our creative ideals. That´s the feelings I want to recreate with my PHOP.

<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>I grew up surrounded by nature, one of the things I love most. I wanted make a piece that remembers me of the tranquility of living in a place like that. From the beginning my ideia was to work with 3D and create a stylized landscape full of nature.</p> <p> </p> <p>I already had some ideas in mind, but i decided to make some sketches first before moving with the 3D. In the first sketch i was aiming for path towards the mountains with a river flowing in the middle, but it was to simple, there was no objective, no true life.<br> In the second sketch my idea was to make something like a cliff, we were on top of a rock watching the landscape with a small lake with a tree in the middle, almost like the literal ideia of an oasis, thats why i left this idea behind. In fact, i decided to abandon the use of water (both river and lake) because I realized that I was just thinking about this detail because in the final composition it would look nice, however, for me it didn't make sense within the "personal Oasis"</p> <p> </p> <p>Since all my sketches are rough, i added some subtitles where i thought they were needed so that everyone understand what i was thinking and imagine.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBMTM2QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--7cca9301e4191ba6cafa2f0edf35c9afac0cfde6/Wip1_sketch.jpg"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBMTM2QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--7cca9301e4191ba6cafa2f0edf35c9afac0cfde6/Wip1_sketch.jpg"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>On the third sketch i decided to add some clouds, I didn't think much about it, but when i steped back and looked again, i had a click in my mind. In the same moment i thought about Ghibli artwork with big clouds with angelic looks. I knew that i had to do something with big clouds with a heavenly looks, almost like we were entering in the sky. I always loved the sensation of being on the top of a mountain and feeling that i was entering in the sky, when we are so high that we se the clouds above us. With this in mind i knew that i had to make a calm landscape, with a path towards the cloud, the path to the perfect place to observe the big cloud on the sky. I quickly started doing my fourth sketch, in this i only add one cloud in the middle and added a couple of flowers. The sketch wasn't exactly like i wanted, but it was getting there.</p> <p> </p> <p>In the last sketch i went for a bigger cloud, the other one was to small, i wanted something bigger, with more power. In this i tried to make the landscape a little bit less flat ,  more curves and with a composition arround the cloud, trying draws the eye to the cloud. My idea was to make a scenario that despite being natural had something human. The path was made by humans, with the rocks showing the right direction to observe nature, to in a way show that humans are living in harmony with nature, without environmental destruction.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBNFQ2QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--51de94c0f40ddf4f790747445d32597d64494512/Wip1_sketchFinal.jpg"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBNFQ2QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--51de94c0f40ddf4f790747445d32597d64494512/Wip1_sketchFinal.jpg"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>I knew that the idea would come to life once the 3D started, I just wanted to have a sketch to guide me so I wouldn't be creating unnecessary assets (like the water that I ended up abandoning)</p> <p> </p> <p>After this process, knowing which path to follow, it was easy to understand what where the main pieces that i would need to create: grass, flowers, rocks, trees and obviously a cloud. I start with the creation of a landscape in Unreal Engine 5 and made its material that allows me to paint in different colors and blend them depending on the strength of the tool, this is going to be really helpful later on.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBM0Q2QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--9eb424da312f2f967916b80261b0dded654436de/WIP1.jpg"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBM0Q2QVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--9eb424da312f2f967916b80261b0dded654436de/WIP1.jpg"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> </div>

Here I picked some sketches that I liked from my sketchbook. I decided to refine them a little bit more so I could decide which version I would like best.

It was important for me to show a scene where the treeman is connecting with the people around him and showing/telling them his tales. I like the idea of the spectators hanging out in the branches and enjoying the stories. The camera is placed in his branches aswell, almost as if you(the viewer) are also sitting and watching.
