Lineart
Lineart that will probably mostly be overpainted but I like having it as a reference.
Sorry, I hope it is not too late. I was thinking a lot what is oasis means for me. I've started to see this idea only yesterday evening. I will simplifying a lot this image in hope to be in time.
With everything going on in the world, I have been thinking a lot about what is one of the most precious part in my life. Becouse of it I wast not know what to draw and how start this work. I've catch this idea Yesterday... This part gives me hope, it returns me to my roots, and it gives me meaning when I don't know what to do.This is to be an artist. Art is core for everything.
After some experimenting, I landed on this composition. I am fond of using portrait format for environment and landscape images and I think it worked well for this image too. By placing my character at the bottom and having the worlds build on top and inward,i feel like it gives an good sense of scope.
For Attempt 5 I just decided to scrap using 3D since it took to long and it just sucked the life out of whatever I was making so I just went for black and white ink. For me this attempt shows a guy on his way home from work (probably a salaryman of some sort) on a busy train where they are all crammed like sardines and he just wants to escape from this depressing reality so he starts thinking and goes to his 'personal oasis' that is just his no one elses. A place where he can be a kid and enjoy fantastic battles that just don't make sense but they're awesome. I think I really wanted to push the childlikeness of it so that's why theres all of these things in the scene and the clouds look painted on from a cartoon. No one can tell him it's crazy, there's no deadlines, no crunch, just him and his thoughts where he can be free from the hustle and bustle of his daily life.
Attempt 4 was based off a bus ride home where I thought 'hey, my head is kind of my personal oasis in this scenerio' so I went and moddeld a scene of my bus ride home. It didn't get past the 3d stage but it did spark some new ideas such as the persons personal oasis being in there head. Which to me makes sense since I think that's probably where most peoples personal oasis actually and each one is completely different person to person. For example I was thinking about what it was like for me as a kid sitting in boring situations like waiting rooms and how I used to just think about all of these imaginary battles and all sorts of crazy stuff with giants and knights and things like that. SO that is why this didn't make it past 3D since it spawned a better idea in my mind and I also thought the 3D stuff just felt a bit generic and boring.
Attempt 3 was where I started getting more experimental but it didn't really have much substance. It was just a bit crazy. As you can see I only got as far as a blender scene of all these characters in a pub because maybe their personal oasis is the pub? So it didn't get past this stage because it was just nonesense.
The next attempt followed a very similair process to the first. This time I tried to tackle the brief a bit more clearly and I tried to create an ideal future where we have beautiful futuristic utopias and lush landscapes where people can just live their lives. As such I set in what I think is a nice setting of a flower field with lots of bright colours to indicate a dream like quality. At first I used the previous characyer but they didn't quite feel like a parent so I went to the extreme and made them a grandparent to make it clear the relationship and the setting.
This was the first attempt I made for the brief and the idea was this punk character in a futuristic city going to their 'personal oasis' where they spray paint away from all the hustle and bustle. It ended up feeling quite generic and flat to me even though everything was there. I started off making thumbnails on scraps of paper and then I moddeled the character in blender and set up the scene in it as well and then I exported it all and took it into twinmotion ( a architectural software because its like unreal engine lite). Finally I did a few paintovers and added the graffiti and finally I adjusted the scene in lightroom mto make it more cinematic.
On to colors!
The tricky bit was finding a balance between showing a fun and bright play-space and the cozy warmth that I would want in my home.
Currently my strategy is to show the bright bubbly fun in the mid- and background while the foreground shows a calm and cozy moment between two friends sketching
I'm planning on moving forward with A1 - I feel like it strikes the right balance of cozy and bright. I also generally prefer my A thumbnails because the magenta to blue contrast is stronger and more appealing than the navy to light blue contrast in the B thumbnails.
See you guys when I've completed the drawing stage in a couple of days!
Ever since a kid I've dreamt of a house that you would navigate by climbing and swimming - encouraging fun exercise to keep you healthy. Later in life I've fallen in love with art, so it's clear to me that this dream space should also be designed for art.
This theme felt like the prefect opportunity to explore that idea.
I start with a couple thumbnails to figure out how to best show the space, and end up settling on a high angle.
Though I like having a friend beckon the audience to join them on a climb in D, the image fails to show the full scope of the home because we can't see the water below.
Specifically, I'm going forward with C, because I like the sense of scale I get from the wide format, and because the left side of B felt a little too cluttered for me.
Excited to continue with the image and good luck to everyone else participating!
I’m using geometry-based grass and foliage with opacity maps, RVTs shaders for the grass to create color variation and wind systems which makes them more random and natural, we can't tell they are all copies. Using Photoshop, I made a noise texture for the wind lines in the grass material. The noise texture, combined with RVTs, creates a very subtle color variation in the landscape.
