After deciding how the values of the final piece would be, I started working on the linework to make sure the perspective was good, and everything looked clear and functional. Although I was trying to put a lot of small details in the image, I wanted to be sure I wasn't pulling too much attention from the focal point. In order to avoid losing myself in the image's details, I tried to be more precise when separating layers, something I usually struggle with. But it was worth it, as it was an easier work to set up the warm light against the cool shadows.
The daisies around the grass and the picnic mat were late ideas I had, that I wasn't sure would work. Fortunately, I loved how it turned out, because it brought a calmer and brighter atmosphere to the illustration.
My next steps now will be to start painting opaquely and adding more atmosphere to the scene, such as flying petals and sunlight rays.
I realized that the first idea is too epic and I don't have enough time to finish it to the level I like . So because of that I want to take the first idea but simplify it to my comfort zone.
I also want to add more symbols that represent my home, including some Ukrainian elements and nature. Such as cherries tree, wheat, individual elements of folklore.
In this world of instability, raging wars, social unrest, and the serious consequences of climate change, I would like to retreat to a sanctuary that offers peace and calmness. My artwork depicts an artist painting under the protective embrace of a glass dome beneath the ocean's surface. This my own underwater haven, , represents an escape from the chaos above.
Under the dome is a cozy studio with easels, paintings, and a comfortable lounging area, illuminated by warm light. This underwater environment fosters creativity and tranquility, allowing the artist to immerse themselves in their craft without distractions. It is a place where the mind can wander freely, inspired by the beauty of the aquatic surroundings.
This artwork symbolizes my personal, warm oasis—a place where one can find refuge and fulfillment through their passion, far removed from the external hustle and bustle.
In this final phase, I scanned the content at 400 dpi and transferred the scanned image to the iPad and prepared to begin colouring with Procreate. Then, I drew the main shadows of the entire illustration and created a color palette that I thought suited the theme. I colored everything, adjusting the colors as needed, and changed the saturation and hue for more natural tones.
Next, I created an overlay layer for all the light in the artwork and added a Multiply layer with noise to enhance that old summer days nostalgia. Finally, I "turned on" the lamp with a couple of new layers and light effects, drew all the related light reflections, and added the flying glowfish in two final layers.
Although I considered adding the fish from the beginning, I wanted to see how the illustration would work without such a blatant use of fantasy creatures. Not only do I think the fish is a good addition to the aesthetic of the illustration, but I also believe it to be a fundamental piece of an Oasis for me.
I hope you enjoy the submission.
Thank you.
I printed the sketch in non-photo blue hue, and inked with fineline detail the whole piece with a G nib and Deleter No. 3 japanese black ink.
I also inked some shadows using a countour hatching technic.
The inking was made with a G-nib because i feel the piece comes out with much more character and subtlety in the line.
I created a personal oasis that shows a very small floating island with two Japanese trees, in the middle of a peaceful seaside mountain scene with small fishing boats roaming around.
My island oasis has a bookshelf with my main book collection with blank papers on top, a strange statue I own, a daruma doll, a big leather armchair , some weights and a hanging string to workout, a small nightstand to hold the essentials to draw, my lamp, and a downward door to return back to reality.
Most of the reference is from objects I own, minus the chair which I still want to buy, and the bookshelf that's from a house of an old fisherman were I used to vacation in as kid. It’s located in a mountain seaside because I get very relaxed by the smell and sound of the sea.
Also I discovered as a child that when looking at my grandmother's goldfish I got a strange sense of whimsical wonder and it got me in the mood to draw fantastical scenes, so I added a fantastical element of glowing flying ghost fish. Ghost fish because I don’t want a flying fish to spill my ink or bump into my face and make me fall.
I drew the first draft digitally, reflecting the image continually in the process to make sure it’s balanced correctly.
After a low detailed of the island and chair, i started with the silhouette of the main element in the illustration, and added from there.
After the island, i moved on to the mountains, sea and clouds.
Finally adding small details in the island and myself sitting on the armchair.
Man made entity that has still the preserved pure and genuine organ, inside. One could call that the Soul perhaps. This entity´s shell is made of advanced technology, that would be able to regulate its own emotions and moods, and energy, etc. Human nature is destructive tendencies and that’s the root of constant violence and chaos outside but the inner peace is always there, untouchable, unbothered.
In this project I am playing with the idea that we have alternative or perhaps ideal little oasis inside of ourselves. That no matter what, no matter how everything around you seems, that will all crumble down, you still have your own alternative state of mind that you can fall back on. A little safe bubble or internal shield where nothing from the outside can damage it. Here I represent a humanoid (Man made) figure which is a vessel that has within her, a ideal world (What is left of what might have been once a human but the only thing that stays is her human consciousness and her human soul) No longer organic baggage. My symbolic interpretation of that world within is a stag or deer in nature with a landscape I idealize as a place that I would like to see one day or be part of. It also represents nature (we will always be part of it no matter how processed or artificial, we become, we still are it).
