Character Effects (CFX) is responsible for creating the complex simulations that make characters and creatures come to life on screen. They help to enhance the realism and believability of the characters' movements and interactions.

The work of the character effects department includes:

  1. Simulation rig setup: The department creates their own rigs and toolsets to utilize in a shot context.
  2. Cloth and hair simulation: The department is responsible for simulating the movement and interaction of clothing and hair on characters, which can be challenging due to the complexity of the motion and the need for realistic detail. They use specialized software to create simulations that respond to the character's movement and environment in a believable way.
  3. Muscle and skin simulation: The department may also be responsible for simulating the movement and deformation of the character's muscles and skin, which helps to create realistic movement and expressions.
  4. Sculpting: The digital sculptors use various software and tools to sculpt the high-resolution details onto the base mesh, using the concept art and other reference materials as a guide.
  5. Prop and interaction animation: the department may animate objects by hand

CFX works closely with the animation department to ensure that the simulations are accurate and fit seamlessly into the character's movement. They also work with other departments, such as character modeling, rigging, and lighting/scene assembly, to ensure that the simulations are properly integrated into the final product.

CFX plays a crucial role in creating the realistic movements and interactions of characters and creatures, helping to bring them to life on screen and make them feel more believable to the audience.
