Biography
Growing up in Taiwan, I rarely thought I would be on the path toward becoming an artist until one day, I accidentally joined a film club in my high school because the guitar club was full for registration(because back then, boys knew how to play guitar were so popular among girls, at least I thought). Then I started to get interested in film, animation, and anything related to visual storytelling.
After that, I decided to study films in college, and that was when I found my spark. I enrolled in a Blender class as my elective. While it was super frustrating, as we know how hard it can be to learn 3D software, it was still amazing to see my first 3D model render in Cycle render. At the moment, even though I was not entirely sure that I wanted to be a 3D artist in the future, I was still strongly eager to learn more about 3D art.
Therefore, during working as a photographer in Taiwan for 1 and half years, I did not stop learning from Youtube by myself and prepared a reel(now I am looking at it, really embarrassing) to apply to a school in the US to learn more about VFX and 3D animation.
Eventually, I chose to attend Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema because there was still part of me wanting to know more about film-making, especially in cinematography. The three years program (over half during the pandemic) gave me enough time to learn Maya, Nuke and other 3D software, and cinematography as my elective at the same time.
Interestingly, as I got into the 3D world deeper and deeper, I felt less and less I wanted to return to being an on-set cinematographer. I like how I can take my time and light my scene while drinking my coffee, and there is an infinite possibility in the 3D world.
But my experience in film-making still helps me when I do the lighting and compositing in Maya and Nuke. Knowledge regarding aperture, depth of field, lens, camera movement, and lighting all of these help me become a better lighting and compositing artist to present a more organic image. In these years, I participated in several projects like music videos and live-action short films. One of the short films (All the Gaps by Mirta Desir) was nominated by an Oscar-verified film festival.
Now, I am going to graduate this May soon, and I hope to I can have a variety of challenges to conquer and continue to learn more so that I can become one of the best artists in the future.
