Biography
When I was six years old, I made my own animated films and VFX using PowerPoint, my scanner, my webcam, Microsoft Paint and Moviemaker. Ever since then, I put all my effort into making my dream of becoming a lighting artist come true. I love to tell stories with colour and light and help viewers dive into a new world for a few minutes. This passion resulted in me becoming a Lighting Lead at Dneg, playing a pivotal role in the USD brain trust, and even writing and maintaining my own ray tracer for a feature film while working on the project as lighting lead and supervisor.
My belief is that like a traditional artist should know their tools, canvas and pigments, a digital artist should know what’s going on in the computation and should be able to understand and manipulate as much as they can to achieve the vision in their head.
I began my journey helping out as a gaffer at Filmschule Baden and later as a lighting technician for theatres in Vienna at the age of 14. For my high school thesis, I explored "Global Illumination as a stylistic device" and developed shaders in OSL and C++ to achieve the look of the impressionistic visual development artworks for my graduation film. This eventually led to writing my own pathtracer from scratch, which is now also a hydra render delegate. It frustrates me to see artists doing anything other than working on creative challenges, so I'm constantly looking to improve workflows.
