Biography

Ranu Chakraborty studied Fine Art in India with a specialization in Indian style painting, which is, ancient, very traditional and culturally rich. She found interests in observing and adopting the style of Indian ornamental designs in every painting, sculptures and architecture of Indian history and mythology that she could come across. It has a very different graphic language that tells stories and emotions with its own forms, colours and treatments. In time, Ranu was introduced to Paper Sculpture as a medium of art, that medium took a new direction to her thinking. As a medium, it is something so unique, so delicate yet strong in its appearance, it motivated her to learn and apply it in her visual representation of her imaginative world. Her emotions and feelings stated taking shapes with this three-dimensional medium. Born and bought up in a remote village in India, Ranu has always found peace and comfort in nature and its beautiful creations. After coming to Canada and living in a city so colourful and being so close to nature, once again her senses felt the eagerness of expressing the joy of being alive. Her search for the soul of nature of and its organic forms brings out new patterns, colours, lights and shadows carefully complementing each other. She finds a very integrated bonding of designs and patterns of nature. Her artwork reflects the changes of form, space and colour, which is similar in every living and non-living elements we see and feel with our emotions. It is a very unique to observe the changes in colour or the shapes of the shadow in the paper sculptures whenever there is a change of light. It proves that how it is perfectly relevant to her subject and exploration of the medium, revealing tones and textures which brings out the essence of life.
