My name is Mo and I am an aspiring storyboard/ character artist. I love telling goofy stories. As you can guess I love animation but what you don’t know is I think I share a cat with my neighbours.

Biography

I grew up in Willowild Sandton and live with my single mother and older sister. They have continued to support my biggest supporter I through every phase of my life. At home we speak English and IsiZulu. When my family did not want to hang out with me I resorted to watching movies or making movies. I only loved two movies when I was younger, well 3 other than Bratz: Tangled and Alice in Wonderland (the Time Burton version) I treasured watching the behind the scenes and saw the technological work going into it. I tried to replicate that by making films with dolls. I created these with my co-director and best friend. Even from a young age, I knew what I wanted to do (I thought I would be a film director) didn't correlate with my school work.

Furthermore, my mother grew up in Soweto in her large family. They grew up poverty on top of the hardship of apartheid. Upon the foundation my grandmother laid of providing them with education, my mother built a life for me where I could life comfortably and have a quality education.

Hence I went to Crawford College Sandton Primary, now called the much pretentious Crawford International, where they encouraged us to express our individuality. Ironically, here is where my canon event of finding a "school appropriate hairstyle" was took place. However, I loved doing art at school.

Throughout my time at school I would do work in art that the art teacher would raise of for the students to see, this made my big head already bigger. My favourite art teacher was Nina, she was cool because we got to call her by name. I liked that she challenged me, almost collaborating with me. I remember, I painted a watercolour of a white girl and I showed Nina my progress. She questioned why I didn't paint someone who looked like me. I replied that it was easier that way. She gave me 99% for art but she said I needed to figure out what would give me 100%. She didn't say it but I think she wanted to see me in my art.

The next phase of my life was high school at St Stithians Girls Collece and it was difficult. l had to leave my old friends and my mother was committed to my academics more than ever. I lost myself and did not choose take art till grade 10. That was one of the best decisions I ever made. I made a closer community of friends and teachers. I would be exposed to a professional side of art quicker than I expected. In grade 10, my artwork called, 'Two Roads,' got featured in the student section of the South African Artist magazine. Although it did not win the monthly feature, the fact it was featured twice is still impressive. I would also submit my artwork,'Red Handed Ripples,' in the Bow Seat Ocean Awareness media competition. Although it is not a notable art competition, I'm that I received a Distinguished Honourable Mention Award. In grade 11, I drew a large drawing for my november practical. It a charcoal drawing I called, ''Dancing in the Mirror.' It depicted a panaroma of goofy dance poses I did in the mirror. It signified a time I came into my own. I would get a request in the next year, from a perspective parent Saun, to purchase the piece. I was the first time a matriculant in my school sold an art piece.

Since my successful artistic era in high school, I went to university and reached the crossroads of playing my mother or following my passion. I chose the first one, a huge mistake. University ended up being a very difficult experience and I lost myself again. Since matric, I had struggled with my mental health due to pressure I put on myself to succeed. Especially since I was studying mathematics, I could not catch a break. This time of my life was really dark and I was excluded. I then decided to use my time to persue animation. My father recently helped me to shadow the Hidden Hands Animation Studio lead by Lesego Vester. They helped me come alive again in my own and I've been working hard ever since.
