I have always had a passion for art as I was surrounded by it. I received sculptures, paintings, and prints for gifts, even as a child. I attended the Bealart Program at H.B. Beal Secondary School. At the time students rotated through Art History, Drawing, Ceramics, Commercial Art, Film and Animation, Painting, Photography, Etching, Lithography, Sculpture and Textiles. Following Grade 11 and 12, I was able to specialize in Printmaking and Sculpture. Based on my portfolio, I was given advanced standing at the Nova Scotia Art and Design College University (NSCAD.) After one year, I returned to Ontario and earned a BFA in Studio Art from McMaster University. It was challenging to select courses in a smaller setting but I particularly enjoyed my Applied Humanities placement at the St. Thomas Elgin Public Art Centre and the printmaking residency at Spark Box Studio. Both before and during my post-secondary education, I earned money by working as a key holder and supervisor for Curry's Artists' Materials. It was a valuable chance to learn about art products and meet like-minded people. However, I wanted to do more with my education so I decided to apply to a post-graduate program at Fanshawe College. I can honestly say that I found college more to my taste than university. The instructors for the program were excellent and I found that being a mature student I made the most of my opportunities. It was difficult as I had very little experience with computers and software other than a digital photography class that included Adobe Photoshop. Nevertheless, my years at Bealart, NSCAD, and McMaster had developed my ideas and ability to design in both 2D and 3D so at least I had those advantages. I successfully earned my certificate in 3D Animation and Character Design although the first wave of COVID shut down the computer labs, leaving us online. Now I am doing some freelance projects (signs, painting, scriptwriting, storyboarding, character design, and illustration) while working at Attic Books as the Head of the Print and Map Department and recently became a home staging assistant. I trust that the future holds further opportunities!
