Visual Storytelling
Hi! I'm Meg and my passions are the 3 "B"s -- Boarding, Banjo, and Bread Baking! I love fight choreography and tend to listen to the same song over and over whenever I sit down to draw.
Biography
My name is Meg Howes, and I am a recent USC animation grad from the deep woods of upstate NY currently working in freelance storyboarding and LOVING it! My dream job is to build a time machine, go back to pre revolutionary France, and make those insanely fancy dresses for the Rococo ladies, but until I can figure that out, I want to board cinematic action scenes for your show or movie.
My upbringing really influences my storytelling: growing up on a house that was once a farm gave me tons of space to run around in the woods, and connection to nature is so important to me, especially now that I am living in L.A. I want to make stories with environmental protection themes, and explore our connection and responsibilities to nature.
Also, my place in the LGBTQ community obviously has me including that rep in my stuff, but I am still mostly focused on telling crazy narratives. I think the best representation is more subtle, less "Hey! Look at this gay character! Aren't we awesome?" and more "This wizard has a boyfriend, and an intense and mind bending quest through the far reaches of the cosmos".
Finally, I am a huge, huge history nerd, and I think that fictional storytelling and historical storytelling follow very similar structures. Life itself is quite messy, but when time passes, narratives can be created and we can see how humanity, no matter how long ago we were born, is pretty much the same. Like, take Cicero, in Ancient Rome. He HATED his fellow senators, and would constantly gossip about it to his friend Atticus, who lived in Greece. Because of his pettiness, we have so much fun political drama from over 2000 years ago. And when you read these letters, you can instantly think of a friend who also can't keep their secrets to themself. These through-lines of the way we act as humans, even though sometimes ugly, really connect us, and stories, both fictional and based in truth, help build empathy and understanding of each other.
But Storyboarding! I am currently the (now solo) storyboard artist on an upcoming indie series called "Among the Others". It is this crazy epic fantasy adventure story, and I have been making 4 prologue episodes for the Kickstarter launch. Currently, I will be working full time on ATO until at earliest May 31st and at latest Jan 1, 2023. However, while I am working on this show, I am trying to talk to as many people as possible, get as much feedback as possible, and learn as much as possible before I am thrown back into the job market. I would love to see the work of my peers and give and receive feedback from others. Getting fresh eyes on work is so important to improvement, and I would appreciate any thoughts!
Wanna talk more? I would! Feel free to DM me on Instagram @margarethours, or email me at [email protected].
