Biography
From day one my parents knew I was destined for great things, because even as a baby I was off the charts … on both the weight and height chart.
I’ve loved films from the get go. My parents would park my pram in front of any screen with moving images and I would be satisfied. I even gained the nickname “Fliek-vlooi” (Film-flea) because of it. Dinosaurs, mutant turtles, dragons, people with blue tattoos that can bend wind, anything that had a fantastical element to it I would watch for hours on end. Along with teletubbies because my parents had the audacity to “bless” me with 3 younger siblings.
I loved it! The stories, the magic, the creatures, the colours, everything.
I was ten when my parents took us all out to go watch How To Train Your Dragon in cinemas and my heart was set on becoming a filmmaker. That's what I wanted to do. Write stories, bring them to life and fill people with pure joy just like that film did for me that night. And I haven’t changed my mind since.
As a kid I loved art, I did realistic drawings, paintings and everything in between the various mediums of traditional art. The only thing I didn’t like about it was the “realism” because it meant there was a right and a wrong way to portray the subject matter and people would point that out. So I just decided that I didn’t like to be corrected and switched over to drawing creatures from my imagination. For the simple reason that no-one could correct me because my characters do not exist. So from there on I created fictional creatures/characters each with a reason behind their distinct characteristics,a personalised story and a vibrant colour palette.
This method of delving into every possible aspect of a character and its story bled into everything else that I did. Writing short stories, storyboarding, animating, set building, … I became obsessed with letting my imagination run wild. It feels like being a kid that cannot be bored because in their head there are endless possibilities to make something dull into something exciting.
My dream is to bring people to that point of excitement. To be able to put something on a screen for them to enjoy and have them walk away with their heads boiling over from delight. Because I know that something as simple as a good story can bring a lot of joy.
I want to capture the bits and pieces of people’s imagination, bring it to life and hopefully sew in some colourful thread into people’s patched lives.
