Biography
I am a Canadian-born Chinese raised by my single, first generation immigrant mom. I am very fortunate to have a kind, loving, strong, and supportive parent, although we grew up quite poor, I never felt it! Despite the financial status of my family, I was never pressured to pursue traditionally sought after professions that a lot of immigrant parents place on their kids.
Instead, I put that pressure on myself - and when I got a poor grade in a subject I loved most: Art class in 7th grade, I switched my focus to pursue what I was good at: the STEM fields. I went into Physics with thoughts of becoming a teacher, to help inspire and engage with the future generation to pursue what they love the most.
But during that time in University to become a teacher, I reignited a passion in the arts. A bit selfishly, I wanted more to pursue what I wanted most, rather than inspire others to do the same. I have since mostly self-taught myself in the arts, while following books, videos, and online courses.
Since then, I have explored and continue to explore many facets of the entertainment arts, there is so much to learn and not enough time to learn it all. I particularly found an interest in concept art as I love exploring my own ideas, designs, and seeing them come to life. But alongside that, I have explored many other fields, workflows, and software - ranging from photogrammetry to Pixel Sprite animation to VR workflows.
I have been wanting to transition fully into the entertainment arts industry, as a Concept Artist or 3D Generalist - and substitute teach in the meantime, declining offers for full-time work in order to pursue this goal. In the meantime, I have worked briefly as a freelance concept artist for various small indie projects from Gavyn Bryan Studios to Sidearm Studios. I have also since participated in a 'Game Jams' to create a game in 48 hrs, as well as work on an indie game project with a friend and fellow physics graduate.
When I am not learning, experimenting, and exploring in digital art - then I am doing traditional art as a fan of plein-air painting using gouache. And when I am not doing that, I enjoy other hobbies such as running, weightlifting, and hiking.
