Biography
Laura Rivas is a first generation Mexican-American writer and director. If she could describe herself in three words, it would be “expect the unexpected.” Laura focuses on quirky female driven comedies with a hint of magical realism and sci-fi stories that champion people of color. She has a double B.A. from Cal State Northridge in Cinema and Television Arts and French Studies. She previously worked on NBC Universal’s Custom Content Marketing team where she produced and edited the 100th episode celebration for Parks & Recreation. Her most recent stint was as an Associate Producer at Warner Bros. On-Air Creative Services. She executive produced, wrote, and directed Tiny Laughs, a 5-episode comedy based on her and her co-creator Rukshan Thenuwara’s life in the “Biz” with a hint of magical realism. It was acquired by Revry TV, touted as the Netflix of queer entertainment, landing in their Top Ten Shows list of 2020 where it’s been streamed over a million times on the platform. It was acquired by Mitú TV in 2021 where it garnered over twenty-two thousand views in the first two weeks. Their script Finding Yesterday, about a mother and son separated across time, made it to the 2nd round of the Sundance Episodic Makers Lab. She enjoys swing dancing, cycling, and playing basketball in the L.A.Feminist Amateur Basketball League (L.A.F.A.B.L.). In addition to an active lifestyle, she likes to support different co-ops in her hometown community of South East Los Angeles.
