Biography

Hello my name is Jonathan Cortez I am a Technical Environment Artist. I started my journey with Unreal engine 4 in 2015 and got hook on game development since then, started with learning basic unreal engine stuff like blueprint, material setup, level composition/layout. As I was building my first game I was able to get it green-light on steam I made a hard decision to redo the levels but with my own 3d model assets, from there I went full dive in learning to get environment image references, topology, UVMapping, material ID, texture setup, material setup, and LODs. Once I could do that like muscle memory I went to learning lighting and post processing effects for a few months and started to enjoy the environment artist route. After learning so much in 3 years I decided to call off the release of the game I was making to get better at making photoreal environments as real as possible. After building a few early environments for my portfolio I came across many repetitive workflows and pipelines that I thought could be automated or somehow make it more art like and less technical. This is when I made another hard decision and went after my ambition to learn more and see if I could improve a environment artist workflow. Started the next month learning Houdini and glad I stuck to it and came to being acknowledged as a technical artist in the community. Now with another 3 years where I dived more into C++ and Python to building complex procedural geo-assets in Houdini and learning more about Unreal engine backend. I can start building tools with full confidences in my ability to delivery high end tools for Environment artist and Technical artist.
