Have you ever dreamed of something that you never thought you could do? Always been told they were a dreamer, Joleen never had the confidence to stray off the path that was expected of them. They pursued STEM and found passion studying ornithology (the biology of birds) but in the middle of post-bacc studies, a sudden diagnosis of RP (Retinitis Pigmentosa) changed everything. The diagnosis of an incurable degenerative retinal disease made a great impact on Joleen, forcing them to reconsider what their true passions were. It was then that they realized that although Joleen is grateful for their biology studies, their true calling was in art which they has been pursuing ever since childhood. In 2021, Joleen decided to seriously pursue an storyboarding career and has taking many online classes from schools such as the Animation Collaborative and the Concept Design Academy. Joleen has also been working closely with a mentor in an informal mentorship program in order to hone their story chops. With a unique perspective stemming from loss and inner struggle, Joleen hopes to continue to weave in grounded emotion and sincere storytelling into their works.
