Biography

I studied Architecture at the Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade do Porto in Portugal for almost three years before I decided that this degree, although being an area I love, was not the field I saw myself working on in the future. As such, I decided to pursue the one area I was sure I would never be tired of: videogames. Since I was 5 years old and got my first Gameboy, videogames grew on me and with me through the years. In this process I realized that the part of the architectural workflow that most captivated me was the presentation renders, the 3D visualization, the recreation of an object that only existed inside the mind of the artist and this helped me choosing the area I would learn to get a job in the videogame industry: 3D Environment Art.

I decided to enroll in a year-long course of 3D Animation and Visual Effects at Lisbon School of Design where I learned the entire workflow of producing 3D game-ready assets and graduated with a grade of 19 in 20. From modeling, UV layout, sculpting, retopology, rigging, animation, texturing to rendering and across a variety of softwares used such as Maya 3D, zBrush, Substance Painter, Substance Designer, Adobe Photoshop and Unreal Engine, I was able to produce the first few pieces for my portfolio that would allow to get my first job in the area. Meanwhile, I was still working a day job to gain experience and sustain myself.

I found my place working as a graphic designer and multimedia artist at Facylar, Lda., a medium-size company in the textiles industry growing at a very fast rate and working with a variety of big clients. In here, my responsabilities include building the company image and marketability, suppporting our salesmen in any way the need, communicating with our providers deciding new collections, doing product branding, handling marketing e-mails and campaigns, etc. At Facylar Lda., I was given an opportunity to simultaneously bring in my unique artistic vision and skills and grow at a extremely fast rate along with the company by being entirely responsible for such an importante area and I am currently very satisfied with my position.

In the last two years I played a crucial part in the company starting two new projects: the first, FAST LANE, a street wear fashion brand, I performed all the image and marketing work needed to create a new brand from stratch as well as some involvement in product design. The second one is detalhes.pt, a home decor website that would work in paralell with Facylar, Lda., contacting with the final costumer. In this project, I played a even bigger role, not only designing the logo, banners and graphic design jobs needed but also creating motion design in Photoshop and Autodesk Maya for internet ads (Instagram stories, Facebook ads banner, etc.).

Although, since it is not my dream job and being an extremely ambitious person, I decide to invest time in some freelance 3D art projects. The biggest one, Viena (joaoveloso.portfolio.site/viena), was a huge turning point where I got comissioned by a high-profile client to work in character art and animation directed to short promotional videos. The reason I’m investing so much time talking about this my jobs and responsabilities in them is to highlight what I consider to be my biggest strengths: adaptability and being a quicklearner. I’ve been able to adapt myself in many contexts and re-invent myself to achieve my goals weather it would be in college, in a business workplace environment or in a freelance artist working alone lifestyle. Being cultured in so many distinct environments would allow me to be a very valuable asset in your company, simultaneously quickly learning the workflow to fit right in and on occasion, bring my experience from different background to provide my individual vision to the team. I am willing to search tirelessly for an opportunity to make games, willing to move to another country to expand my view of the world and absorb inspiration from another places, learn a new language, work in other environment that I’m not used to.
