Biography
Jayvee Mallari was born and raised in Northern California and as every artist's origin story, he got spanked for drawing on the wall. Throughout his childhood, he would draw a lot in class and watch many animated films from Studio Ghibli, Studio Chizu, and Disney. What resonated with him watching these films are the storytelling and lovable characters. The thought of working in the art industry has never crossed his mind since people would often say there’s a stigma against pursuing an Art Major due to limited growth. However, that started to change when he watched the documentary “Avatar Spirits' ' by Kurt Mattila, which is about the making of the hit TV show “Avatar: The Last Airbender”. What inspired him about the documentary was the idea and thought process behind the show and how you can make a living working in the art industry. He shakes away the doubts and sets forward to pursue his journey in animation.
In 2013, he started his journey into art by taking basic fundamentals classes at De Anza in order to eventually transfer to SJSU; renowned for its Animation program. Even though he found his passion in art, he had a long road ahead of him. Despite not having drawn in years, it didn’t stop him and he relentlessly pursued the craft through practice and repetition. He spent most of his years in school studying the foundations, anatomy, and color theory. After three years in community college, he has earned enough credits to transfer to SJSU. However, he decided to go a different route and attend an art school at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. The reason behind it was that he wanted to be in a school of creatives and grow a lot more as an artist, even if it meant moving away from home.
During his time at Otis College of Art and Design, it was a lot more difficult compared to community college. The classes were challenging and there were so many amazing artists in his school that he felt he was at the bottom of the food chain all over again. He had a lot of difficulties learning new programs that were used in animation such as Maya and Adobe suite. He compared himself to all of his peers and wasn’t sure what role he would work in the animation industry. Until one day, he stumbled upon his friend’s storyboarding and was in awe. Everything about the storyboarding process was what he wanted to breakout in the industry from drawing quick gestures, telling stories visually, and film language. He spent most of his school year studying varieties of films, joining life drawing classes, and learning about storyboarding. School is about to end and it is time for him to set out in the world. With everything he learned about animation, he is ready to take on a path to become a storyboard artist.
