Biography
I Graduated Matric in 2012.
I began attending film school in 2013 where I studied at the Centurion based Open window Instiute where my orginal plan was to double major in film and television and computer animation. However I grew increasingly frastrated with the computer animation process. I experienced tremendous self doubt. Having no preconceived notcion of the highly specailized skills required for computer animation I made the painful decision to drop the course and focus my energy on live action film making. I learend various skills including screenwriting and stroryboarding which developed into my two major strenghts.
I graduated from the Open window in 2015 with a BA in film arts. After film school I went out into the world of work hoping to find a job relating to audio visual production. I was able to work as a set dresser on a feature film directed by Sallas De Jager and produced by Bosbok 6. Following this 4 week adventure working as a intern there has not been much else. Apart from another short film that was produced by a first time director who had money but no idea what he was doing. I became discourgaged by the whole notion of somehow getting into the film industry. I actually considered relocating to Cape town. However I knew that there would not be any guarantee of actually finding work.
I had made the decision to drop animation in the hopes of being more practical and finding a job in live action only for it to lead to a dead end. After a whole year of unemployment I settled for the first job I could find. I have been working as a general clerk at a lawyers firm for the last 80 months. I have used my savings to produce self funded short films that had little success.
However given the resources I rekon I could produce a proper short film. I am not completly discouraged by the notion of producing more 48 hour film projects. I actually would love to make another thousend films of this nature. I believe in collaboration. self reliance has absolutly no merit when it comes to guerrilla style filmmaking. I have learned that the hard way.
When it comes to animation - I keep returning to the theme of storyboarding and story sturcture. During Covid I focused my energy on studying the story structure of Vince Gilligan's Breaking bad. I took the whole season one and storyboarded every single scene to understand how the story was unfolding. I wanted to know what was it that made this amazing series tick. Having learned everything I know about story structure from Stavros Halvatzis I knew that I could do something with the meduim of animation.
This is why in 2022 I was a participant in the Triggerfish academy first ever stroyboarding course.
I wanted to produce something that could be made into a animated short film only to discover that I should be writing a children's book.
What I really want to do is finish my first ever children's book and get it published. Once I am a published author I would have protection over my own intellectual property. I want to publish my children's book and have it made into a fully fleshed animated series. I am prepared to do what ever it takes to make this vision in my head a reality.
I am very interested to know what I can learn from this incentive.
I would love to one day be involved in the stroy department of a animated production.
If I were to specify a department I would like to find myself - it would be the story department.
Storyboarding/ producing rough animatics and figuring out story structure - that's what I want to do.
I want to lay down the foundation of a narrative in it's earliest conception and work to produce a finished product that can be developed into a animated feature. That's the reason why I went to film school in the first place. It's the reason why I am intrested in this initiative.
