Biography
Dilruba Tayfun (b. 1995. Antalya, Turkey) is an artist, designer, and storyteller based in Amsterdam. Tayfun utilises materials from her surrounding environment as a form of mark-making, creating new forms of expression from foraged twigs to form an expansive language that dips in and out of the tactile and digital realms. Her work deals in creating and transcribing stories - bridging fiction and non-fiction, science and spirit, east and west, embodied and imagined. From this all-encompassing and durational practice emerges a distinct lexicon that magnifies the magic of experience.
I lead the ongoing major project Togather which was the 2021 Grand Winner of THU’S Sony Talent League. After the initial pitch was announced as a finalist, I put together a team consisting of UX designer & strategist Marie-Claire Springham, visual artist Ruben de Haas & filmmaker Ari Snow. In a ten week sprint and with contributions from many creatives, a website, downloadable brush files and a pitch video came to life. A platform where anyone can make and share their custom digital brushes from real-life objects. A home for inky marks and our natural interactions converted into digital brushes for all to download and use, and get inspired to also gather. The original brushes are still in use across the world and we're slowly moving into Phase II through organized workshops, activities and research.
Togather is a hybrid material library for artists of the digital age offering custom digital brushes from real-life objects and workshops that empower artists to diversify and enrich their mark-making and storytelling by including our living planet in our projects. This initiative desires to restore the relationship of the creator with their surrounding natural environments, through foraging and gathering of one’s own art materials.
After almost 4 years at TomTom's in house creative agency, I'm ready to go full-time in a direction that calls me, and run my own studio practice, as well as revive Togather's activities. I'm a graduate of Central Saint Martins, London, with a degree in Graphic Communications Design.
