Biography
Claire Chang is a Chinese-American artist born and raised in the California Bay Area. She first started drawing at a young age, copying pictures of Disney Princesses from books as well as a five-year-old possibly can. As a quiet only child in her family, art was her way of expressing herself and passing the time at home.
In her middle school years, she taught herself stop motion using her American Girl dolls. This was her hands-on introduction to animation as an activity, and she was fascinated by the process of multiple images coming together to tell a story. However, this remained a hobby until she saw Frozen when it opened in theaters on her 16th birthday. Struck by awe of the animation and cinematography, she binge-watched behind-the-scenes videos of the animation process, from storyboarding to voice recording footage, which slowly bled to other animated films as well. It was then that she realized she wanted to help create stories that helped audiences in positive ways, just as Frozen had helped her realize what her real dreams were.
After she graduated high school, she moved south, majoring in Entertainment Art/Animation at California State University, Fullerton. While a college student, she learned new skills in various classes before choosing visual development as her professional path. She received her BFA in Fall 2020. To this day, using her newly refined techniques, she continues to polish her artistic skills with, backgrounds, props, and characters, using her travels as her primary means of influence. Her goal as a visual development artist is to create a more accurat picture of how the world is experienced, and she is currently working on a portfolio highlighting various cultures that make up the Asian diaspora. As an artist, she hopes to inspire people to feel represented as humans first, and help them feel confident and proud of their backgrounds.
Outside of creating art, she is passionate about traveling and learning about different cultures.
