I'm studying painting and animation and freelancing as a cel-animator. I'm passionate about bringing relatable, diverse characters to life and telling captivating stories through moving images.

Biography

My name is Caro Laa, I'm 24 years old and I'm currently in my fourth year of studying Painting and Animation at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria. Right after graduating from the Mediadesign- and Animation-class at HTLBVA Spengergasse, an animation highschool in Vienna, I started working as a freelance 2D-animator next to my studies. Over the past three years now I got the chance to gain work experience on various projects for commercials, music videos and exhibitions. Now I'm looking to get into an internship to refine my cel-animation- and drawing-skills. I have been very lucky to know what I want to do for a living since a pretty young age, the moment I got into animation school at 16-years-old I have decided to do everything in my power to make my dream of working as a cel-animator reality. My passion for animation developed even earlier, growing up with the hand-drawn Disney movies, Ghibli, Animes and many 90's Cartoons, this passion was only fueled in animation highschool and never stopped growing since then. Since I started studying, I've taken on any animation-job I could: So far I've had the chance to work as a remote-freelancer on a (not yet-released) project for the studio Cathouse, and on "PAUSE" for Capsana by Mathematic. Before that I always had a lot of responsibility managing projects from start to finish on my own, like directing and solo-animating the trailer for PIXELVienna 13 or the music video for "Heal Me" by KAYOMI. With every project so far I've always tried to bring out the best I could, all the while aiming to learn the most from every experience. My dream would be to work as a sakuga cel-animator on captivating stories like the ones I grew up with. I want to bring relatable, diverse characters to life that kids can identify with, and create worlds that one can dive into and forget everything else around for a while. I want to contribute my part to making 2D-Animation more inclusive and a place everyone can feel seen. My goal is to reach industry-level in cel-animation, so I can work on projects that focus on storytelling that resonate with the audience and leave an impact. That's why I'm looking to get on-site work experience at an animation studio outside of Vienna through an Erasmus internship. I'm super excited and prepared to get the chance to grow as an animator and storyteller, so any tips and feedback are really appreciated !
