Born in Puerto Rico. I came to the states speaking very little English. Spent most of my time drawing and noticed it got me some positive attention early on in school. So, the drawing continued. In 6th grade at my first official art class, we were taught perspective. I was fascinated. It was something I wasn't great at and had to practice. The teacher allowed me to make it my focus throughout my time in middle school. As a former draftsman/designer his knowledge on the topic was endless. From 1 point to 4 point and curvilinear perspective, I got a much better feel for staging. Skipped most of high school to be honest :P. College had open figure drawing almost everyday. I attended as much as I could. I knew I wasn't quite where I should be. Getting comfortable with the figure, I tried painting the figure and fell in love with the Post impressionist painters. A professor encouraged me to paint outdoors. I was hooked. I began selling my work. Mainly cityscapes that had some kind of underlying narrative in them. I desperately wanted to paint my long forgotten home of Puerto Rico, and use it to inspire local youths to learn the history of their Taino ancestors. I struggled on what might be the right venue to host the show. Eventually I came to the conclusion that painting just wasn't the medium to attract youths attention and I really wanted this to be something that would help educate. I had a story and it couldn't be told painting by painting. I turned to the comic book medium. Something I left behind way before the 6th grade. Another challenging experience of learning unfamiliar design principles, exaggerated anatomy , line weight etc. To gain some more exposure to help promote the comic release, I did a little amateur animation of some of my favorite characters. Working animators took notice and began to advise me on how to improve. I was surprised at how gracious animators were with their time. I honestly think 2d animation is not something every skilled artist can do. In my studies I noticed a devotion and respect to a craft unlike in any other field. A devotion and respect I’ve gained with every slow increase in skill. Animation has been an eye opening and humbling learning experience, which I yearn to make the best use of by contributing efforts in a team setting.
