Biography
I was born as a happy child of the 90s in Trier, Germany. As a kid I loved generally everything and I cannot remember that I drew alot. But that changed in school, so I did what everybody does, draw in class to avoid boring math class. And drawing somehow evolved into something more important to me than all the other classes. I made one of my 3 big discoveries after my graduation: you can make a living by doing art.
So after School I wanted to do 'something with drawing' and I pretty much did the only thing that I could do in my small town, I studied graphic design. Graphic design is not really the best thing to study when you want to draw, I realized quite fast, but I like to stick to my decisions and so I took every class that I could to specialize on concept art and character design. During that time I made my second big discovery in life: Animation.
After my Bachelor of Arts in 'Character Design and Concept Art' I decided to extend my studies into the field of animation. This led me 2 Years later to my Masters Degree with a final dissertation in 2D Animation.
Small towns do not have big studios. That is a learning I had to undergo when I started to apply. So I decided to take my chances and start my own selfemployed Freelance career. This was quite a liberating experience. It enabled me to work for multiple companies and even though I did not have enough experience to work for the big animation studios, I could work wherever I wanted.
So after those 28 years of 'living the small-town-life' I felt in need of bigger pictures, landscapes, people, experiences, you may call it: I wanted to see something from this world. I packed my stuff and went to New Zealand for a year of Work and Travel.
Happy Days, I saw the Weta Workshops, hiked trough mountains, went surfing, met wonderful people and learned to speak quite fluently the english languange. During that trip I worked as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator. I produced my own stickers, started to learn how to paint and how to write invoices.
I came back to germany just one month before the corona pandemic started to 'kick in'. Hard times.
My long kept dream: to work for the animation industry started to seem an impossible undertaking. But films like Spa Studio's film 'Klaus', Sony Pictures' 'Spiderman - Into the spiderverse' or Disney's 'Wreck it Ralph' inspired me. So I had to try it, break into the industry.
I tried to get to know people and go to fairs but it was super hard to get any kind of connection during the pandemic. That was my third learning: It will take all of my efforts to find my spot in the industry. So I decided to look for an alternative path. And I found the School for Games in Berlin.
They liked my work and after 6 short months of tense waiting I moved to Berlin and started my education at the S4G. I have to say: it is awesome. I got to know so many super talented people. My teachers are coming directly from the game industry and I can gain experience by working on projects in teams of 6 or more people. I can work on my strengths and overvome weaknesses to prepare for my next level up: Breaking into the industry.
So where to go from here? I will finish my school in about one and a half years, October 2023. What will happen then I cannot say. I hope the pandemic will be history 'til then. And I hope I can travel (and maybe live in?) America one day. Whatever happens 2023 I hope I can find my place in the industry and do what I like best: drawing.
