Animation student from the Isle of Man studying in Dundee, Scotland. I'm always looking to learn and can't wait to connect with others over our passion for animation!

Biography

I am currently studying in my final year of animation at Duncan of Jordanstone College in Scotland in which i have been able to experience the animation pipeline through working on short group films, both 2D and 3D. I’ve been able to showcase my design work for a short sting group film set in Kowloon City, China for the Dingle Animation Festival 2020 in Ireland, where it was nominated for the 'Best Sting' award. This only affirmed my love for short-form filmmaking and desire to contribute to a team production. In my free time I enjoy playing on a mixed, all-ages volleyball team at my local sports centre, exploring abandoned buildings and plein air paint. My favourite part of visual development and designing for storytelling is the research process through exploring online, in literature through my university's library or on location in person. Learning more about specific locations, traditions and nature of the world is invaluable and I feel very lucky to be able to do so through my work. For my dissertation on 'The origins of Manx Fairytales' I have turned my research to the small island in which I live, the Isle of Man. Delving deeper into the origins of the fairytales that I grew up being told by exploring the island to find the real-world locations the stories are set and documenting this visually through drawing in my sketchbook. An example of a challenge I overcame was one in which I was tasked with designing the coastal cliff road for my group's short film 'Bus, Stop!', I had collected reference online however I wanted to explore landform shapes in person. The variety of cliff shapes on the island was too limited from my view in person and so I decided to visit the beach instead, observing, drawing and painting the rocks (which had much more variety) there as if they were mini cliff landforms. This resulted in a landscape design for the film that I enjoyed and felt more authentic to real life variation. The project I'm currently working on is a short film set in Pripyat (the nearby young city of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant) based upon an account of a young woman returning to her childhood home. Having obsessively researched the topic, my favourite gem I came across was the melancholic advertising pamphlet, drawing people to the city that would later become frozen in time. I am always trying to continue learning from others and the THU Career Camp is the perfect place to do so in a professional environment with peers who are just as passionate about storytelling and filmmaking as I am.
