Choosing a path

For younger aspiring artists sometimes it's hard for them to choose which way to go, what they should be doing in the animation pipeline. Should they pick doing characters only or backgrounds or animation.. Etc. What if an artist wants to do everything?! How can we choose the path for us? Does our personalities/life style affect these choices? Should artists stick to only doing one thing?!
