You’re doing an everyday task, and out of nowhere, you’re overwhelmed with a flood of intense thoughts and feelings. Your heart starts racing, your chest hurts. Your palms are sweating and you feel like you can’t breathe. If this sounds familiar, you likely know what it's like to experience anxiety.

French author Saint-Exupery likely said it best: “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” But is the quest to achieve perfection healthy? Although its pursuit may prompt us to start moving towards our goals (a good thing!), in excess it can also paralyze us. So, is it time we stop trying to achieve perfect and focus on looking ahead instead?

As an artist, early on your journey of self-discovery, you might find yourself wondering, what's better, schooled or self-taught? What will give you the most knowledge, connections, insights and success moving forward? Although we'd love to think there's an easy answer, the response is actually far more nuanced. In all truth: it depends.

As advances in tools, technology and communication have been made, creators have inevitably said to themselves: it's all been done, why bother trying? But it hasn't been done by you, with your particular perspective and frame of reference. With your background and experiences. With your hands and ears and eyes. With the connections that you draw between things. That's what makes it unique. That's what makes it meaningful. That's what makes it worth doing.

So many times we come to a crossroads and hesitate. We start doubting ourselves, underestimating our skills, talent, ideas, and we tend to tack on the excuses: “too little time,” “too busy,” “not good enough.” Why? Because it's hard to take the first step and put ourselves out there, for other people to judge. True, it can be daunting. But often it’s at that precise moment that we most need to silence the negativity and step forward.
