Project Description

This project was started from my old dream of actually meeting Sullivan from 'Monsters, Inc', knocking on my door and hoping he says, “Boo!” for me. I’ve always wanted to bring imaginary characters into real life. But most of them are stuck inside the screen. Also, most of the immersive experiences require fancy environments including complex sensors. But what if we could bring the imaginary world to our bedroom, not the fancy computer room, and use our blanket as the tangible interaction tool, not the complicated sensors? Those ideas made me plan a Mixed Reality 3D Animation for anyone in any space. ‘DIY Mixed Reality KIT: Invasion!’ is a Mixed Reality project, with a cereal box-like kit for a customizable immersive experience. The project brings the imaginary characters into your space, fitting the content to your surroundings, and uses your belongings as the tangible component of the story. The kit includes physical markers, ‘Eggs’, that help the Mixed Reality system set the initial position of each character. You can put the Eggs wherever you want and the story will reflect the unique position of the eggs. And before starting the story, you can bring your belongings, like a pillow or blanket (something soft enough that it is okay to jump into), and add them as a part of the story. Your pillow can become a mysterious plant and your ball bouncing against the wall could become a monster who is about to chase you.

Inside the kit box, there will be the 'Eggs', which will be used as the markers for the Mixed Reality scene and you can place them anywhere in your room no matter how your room is shaped like. And bring your soft belongings and add them to the story as a part of the Mixed Reality scene.

What is <DIY Mixed Reality KIT: Invasion!>?

If you hit play, the Mixed Reality scene will start spatial mapping your room, and create the customized environment. After that, the 3D Animated characters will pop out from the Eggs, invading your room!

How does it work?
