Project Description
Disabled Joy is a multimedia art piece that exhibits the joys of being disabled. As a disabled person, I find the narratives about disability told in media very irritating. We are often relegated to being either the sob story or inspiration porn. People think about being happy in spite of disability, not because of disability. I want to make a piece of art that challenges that by showing the ways that disability itself can be joyful. I would love to create a film around a piece of music I have written about Disabled Joy. In the film, I would draw the narrative on my skin. I would like to cover my body in pictures that tell the story of disabled joy and make that process into a short film. It is important that part of the medium is my body because disabled joy is so much about working within your body's limitations and not trying to fight them.
