Project Description
“In a near future where a global pandemic has hijacked people’s dreams, two best friends must train their paranormal abilities at the International Academy for DNxDs (Dream Ninjas and Detectives) if they hope to save the world.” This project is a pitch for a 2D/CG anime-inspired TV series (23” x 26 eps) for a teenage audience (13+). DNxD’s style and tone fit within the shonen anime genre, which typically features a male protagonist for an audience of teenage boys. Black female protagonists in shonen anime are nonexistent. This project will bring a new voice and story lens to the genre. The innovative aspects of this series come from its framing and animation techniques. We will explore surrealist and abstract art styles by combining 2D and CG for the environment designs, to reflect a changing Dreamscape environment. I’ve been a massive anime geek since I was 7 years old. I’ve watched thousands of hours, studied animation at university and aspire to work in the industry. I'm passionate about finding my own expression of the art form and channelling my voice for more diverse representation. Only 6/ 50 British childrens’ shows had a diverse lead in 2019. This pitch aims to bring black female protagonists to centre stage instead of fulfilling the stereotypical side character tropes. Furthermore, setting the school in an international academy is intentional to focus on a multicultural melting pot of rich and diverse characters for a diverse audience.
