  • Final Image

To finish the illustration, I took off the importance of some elements to get a better reading of the scene. Everything was too detailed and taking the focus out of what mattered to the story.

I had the most amazing time working on this piece, that allowed me to learn and apply a lot of things I've been studying and also share with the world a little bit of who my grandmother was.

I truly hope you enjoyed it. Many thanks, guys!

  • Finishing

One more layer of light to create a warmer mood and make the scene more cinematographic. I really love studying movies to better understand this process.

  • Render

This is the result of the color base with light. From this point on, I started rendering the final art, a more relaxing part of the process.

  • Volumes

The idea is that this shadow works to unify all this mass as a big shape, separating plans and giving depth to the scene.

  • Base Color

I like to start with the base colors to understand the scene balance right front the beginning. This is the process Dice Tsutsumi and Robert Kondo talk about: to think in an initial phase with a neutral light and to work the final light as a second layer on top of everything. For me, it's a very practical way to work, even to alternate something, if necessary.

  • Lines

I really like the painting process that Tonko Houses's guys teach and I'm loving it and using it more and more in my work. Even so, I still use lines a lot to structure the drawing and to test the possibilities. Many times I also use Blender to get the basic composition, but this scene ended up with more loose lines.

  • Character refined

I enjoyed this version the most, found it more balanced, with a good visual for the main character. Made some studies to find the better design and then started to work on the final art.

  • Character explorations

Since the beginning I decided not to draw my grandmother as she was. I am currently studying characters and decided to use the contest to improve my silhouette skills.

  • People

This was one of the funniest parts of the process, work on these portraits was great to relax a bit between steps. Also, it was a good moment to apply a few things that I’ve been learning about characters and shapes.

  • Color thumbs

Another hard decision: defining what was the mood I would like to communicate. I had two options: a warm scene in the sunset, for a more nostalgic mood; or a brighter one, happier, representing the character's happiness for writing her own name for the first time ever. I decided to go the second way, since I thought it would represent the scene better.

Once the idea was defined, I tried to explore some possibilities. It was a little bit difficult because there were a lot I would like to portray, such as my grandmother's name, people watching the class from around the world, all this taking place in a humble farm in Brazil in a near future.

In the end, I decided to work with a scene where the elements have similar importance and the focus is the main character: Alice.

  • Reports and context

Maybe digital education is already a reality for everyone in some countries, but that is not what happens in Brazil. During the Covid-19 pandemic, many children couldn't study and left school, since they didn't have a proper connection to take remote classes. I searched for some articles and news to better understand this context and imagine how different things would be different if 5G connection was available to everyone, everywhere.

  • Farm references

Since I too grew up in a farm, as you can see in the pictures, I searched for my own memories to create a very genuine mood.

  • General references

For this illustration, I looked for some references that bring beauty to daily moments. I really appreciate names as Norman Rockewell, Robert Frank and Robert Doisneau.

Another very important point for me was to bring elements from my country, Brazil. I've always loved to observe the shape of the hills we have here and wanted to put this in the piece.

  • About Alice

This was my grandmother. She always used to welcome me with a good cup of coffee, and the inspiration for my idea came from a moment I had with her.

Because she grew up in a farm in Brazil in the 1940's, she never went to school. When she was 70 years old, she decided to start studying and learned to write and read a little things. I remember her, over the moon, with a piece of paper in her hand, showing me she had learned how to write her own name: Alice.

  • Introduction

Hi everyone, I'm so happy for beeing a part of this challenge again!

When we think of agents of change, we usually think about children or big heros. But inspired by my grandmother, who grew up in a simple farm and just learned to write and read when she was 70 years old, my idea was to imagine a world where anyone can study from anywhere, it doesn't matter who you are or how remote and humble is the place you live.

An Adult Education Class where an old farmer woman finally learns how to write her name thanks to digital education. A moment where 5G opens new possibilities of inclusion. Because by allowing people of any age, region or social class to easily connect to each other, we can break barriers that separate them from their dreams.
