  • 08 - Keyshot, Clay renders

<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>Hey guys. </p> <p> </p> <p>I finally hit Exit in ZBrush. I was going back and forth so many times because of tiny things! I wasn't satisfied with the eyes so I kept adjusting and adjusting. Thank god for the ZBrush/Keyshot Bridge thingy, I have no words for how it was helpful in this process. </p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"> <p>Anyways, finishing my business in ZBrush means its time to set up my scene in Keyshot. Yay! After transfering the geometry, the first step was applying a stantard clay material to the entire model. This material that I created is pretty much just a grey diffuse material with high specular and a semi/matte roughness level - its really quick to adjust in the material graph and allows me to see the changes I'll make in the environment and lighting afterwards Otherwise I probably couldn't see the changes in the model right away, trust me, that's just counter-efective.</p> <div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBbXFNIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--7d077ca8d992a87ca5df67c9cc777f54a09c0d6f/2022-07-27%20(1).png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBbXFNIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--7d077ca8d992a87ca5df67c9cc777f54a09c0d6f/2022-07-27%20(1).png"></a></div></div> </div> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"> <p>Also, the shiny thingy applied to the model in this screenshot is the material I created. It looks like this because I had performance mode on to speed my navigation but as soon as I turned it off it turned into normal clay. Pretty cool feature huh?</p> <div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBbXVNIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--882df7e1b29327465d94cb3e23643ac90fc218df/2022-07-27%20(3).png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBbXVNIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--882df7e1b29327465d94cb3e23643ac90fc218df/2022-07-27%20(3).png"></a></div></div> </div> <p> </p> <p>Then, after applying it to each material using the labels function in keyshot (this function allows to toggle the clay on and off as needed), I started adjusting the HDRI parameters right away.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBbTJNIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--5dc9e024ebef5ec180c25541014096329c1ff041/2022-07-27%20(2).png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBbTJNIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--5dc9e024ebef5ec180c25541014096329c1ff041/2022-07-27%20(2).png"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>I picked a default one from Keyshots library and tweaked it untill i liked the result. Then I created a simple light setup with a front, top and bottom light and, of course, a rim light. There's something about rim lights that adds that sweet spiciness I like. Also, I wanna add that I worked with grayscale almost to the end of thisl lighting creation workflow because it helps to see if the whole composition is working or not. When I finished setting the lights, I gave them different tints. </p> <p> </p> <p>(HERE'S A LITTLE TIP: work with a dark background and with the HDRI in low brightness. Add each light separately and, when adjusting one, keep the others turned off. Trust me, it's a good way to see what each one is doing to the scene. )</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBbXlNIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--3ba7e0f9cf7a73e73862431c95330a5bc900898b/2022-07-27.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBbXlNIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--3ba7e0f9cf7a73e73862431c95330a5bc900898b/2022-07-27.png"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>I also set up my cameras in between. I was using ZBrush's polypaint on the skin (which is ok, obviously, but I was completely ignoring the fact that skin in translucent and has subsurface scattering and that was why it was looking incredibly dead and weird. I tweaked a few things in the materials graph and boom, she's alive and with blood vessels now). • 04 - Quick poses

    Hey guys.

I know I said it was ZBrush time but I wanted to decide on the final pose first so that, if possible, I can start sculpting using the Target Pose function on ZBrush. Figuring out the pose first seemed like a better approach for me since it allows me to see sillouettes and overall shapes better rather than comitting to a general idea, specially when the deadline is so close.

So all this to say I spent the whole morning photographing myself as Maria (btw, my seed projector in my photos was my food blender. Yes, my food blender) to get more accurate references, then I moved to Clip Studio Paint and started drawing. Here's the result!

Hope you're all having fun with this challenge because I sure am too! :)

  • 03 - The Seed Projector

<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>Hey guys, it's me again!</p> <p> </p> <p>Remember that confidential but not so confidential project I said Maria is working on? I present to you the Seed Projector!</p> <p> </p> <p>The Seed Projector is a device that Maria is developing that can project a previously designed seed for a specific plant. She inputs all the parameters on her computer and projects it in the Seed Projector - just like that, a new costumized species is created. That alone is the new and sustainable alternative to older methods used on food and plants to help fight outside agressions (climate, dryness, etc). If Maria suceeds, humans will be able to feed a huge amount of population much faster and more efficiently, while avoiding diseases and harming human health, which pretty much explains why there were so many vases in her house plant - I was planning on representing the little experiences she was doing while testing the Seed Projector.</p> <p> </p> <p>Also, here's the final design for Maria! </p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"> <div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBb0IvIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--81d9783be947be3ac66ae2de29db5b57e69389dd/THUFinalDesign.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBb0IvIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--81d9783be947be3ac66ae2de29db5b57e69389dd/THUFinalDesign.png"></a></div></div> <p>Well... I guess it's ZBrush time! </p> </div> <p> </p> </div>

  • 02 - Introducing Maria Vidoza, my Agent of Change

<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>As promised, here’s my Agent of Change:</p> <p> </p> <p>Maria Vidoza, a biotechnology engineer whose biggest passion is science. She is fierce, determined, smart, easygoing, cheerfull and a natural friendly person. She loves her family, even though she lives on her own in Lisbon. Besides her family, she also loves her job and her three little dragons. Yes, you read right, her three little dragons. She is currently working with the government on a confidential project that could change humanity for the next centuries. Don’t worry, it’s not that confidential - I know all about it and I’ll introduce it to you along with some cool sketches.</p> <p> </p> <p>The thing is - she is actually 17. She was recruted by the government because her neighbours pressed charges against her for being super “loud, noisy and flashing lights in the middle of night” - turns out she was actually starting her little project that later turned to be one of the most important things she has done in her life. The police reports about that incident travelled faster than speedlight thanks to 5G supported technology used by the authorities and a few days later, boom, the government nocks on her door with a gold proposal - work on her project with ilimited funds and in return the outcome should belong to the government.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBaWQrIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--207cb9a9e3fd3f6290358729191e8361e79dfaac/Thu%20Character.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBaWQrIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--207cb9a9e3fd3f6290358729191e8361e79dfaac/Thu%20Character.png"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>This sounds like all fun and games but actually I've been having dificulties with the design. At first I did something different, more adult like if you want to put it that way, but I wasn't feeling it. I wasn't enjoying it. So I decided to listen to my gut and change it! I wanted something more stylized that could transmit a sense of calm and funny character and, of course, more color! Anyway, here's my previous design that I ended up changing: </p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBaVorIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--cfe588bc33b5075da41299db178ad1b987a54273/Thuearlyconcept.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBaVorIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--cfe588bc33b5075da41299db178ad1b987a54273/Thuearlyconcept.png"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>I didn't like the style, the overall feeling so I decided to not push it further if I wasn't feeling the excitement I always feel when I design a new character. </p> <p> </p> <p>See you soon with more creative processes!</p> <p> </p> </div>

  • 01 - Introducing myself, explaining my vision and revealing my initial concept

<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>Hi everyone.</p> <p> </p> <p>First things first, let me introduce myself! I’m Márcia, a portuguese student (currently in Lisbon School of Design in Oporto) aspiring to be a 3D character artist. Let me just say that I hope we can all have fun in this challenge, meet new artists, learn new techniques and different workflows, specially with these "behind the scenes" posts! I've been reading all of them since the submissions started and I'm really enjoying your creative processes! </p> <p> </p> <p>When I read the theme, my first plan was to create a rendered scene with my character and I actually started to blockout and model a few things but later I realized that I wasn’t focusing on the most important part of my idea, which was the character design. Eventually I decided to step back and really work on my character. But since I have all my models and blockouts, I thought you would like to see the process of developing my concept.</p> <p> </p> <p>My very first idea was that <em>everything</em> <em>is connected</em>. When I say everything, I mean <em>Every Thing</em>. I envisioned a world where we have holograms representing this connection and, with the power and magic of 5G, this connection indicates lots of interesting and informative stuff instantly! For example, an animal’s hologram would include: name, species, age, owners, level of feeding and hidration, overall feelings, among other things. Objects like furniture would include % of occupation, technology would have life-span, malfunctions or the level of energy being aqcuired from the sun, for example. Plants inform us of their level of hidration, % of grow and how long untill the next harvest. Weather, air traffic, UV levels, pollution levels, all available to us instantly. Living in this world would mean that if we were to go for a walk, we could see how people were feeling, what they would be needing in the moment, and so much more! We would look around and really analyze how everything is in that very instant. How cool would that be?</p> <p> </p> <p>Eventually I decided to sleep on it and let it brew a little. My brain started having all those crazy visions of this society and I started writing everything down. For me, a 5G world represents a world where everything is solar powered, homes are smart designed and built - 3D printed and self-sustainable. Houses are capsule shaped buildings that can float and moved to wherever each owner feels like since the energy that powers these systems is renewable. Plus, in this society, humans cultivate the effort of taking care of the planet, we have green spaces everywhere and extinct animal species are now being recreated through robot prototypes. Humanity is slowly rebalancing the planet and global warming is now almost erradicated from scientist’s predictions.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"><div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBdGw3IiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--b030a4386d2dc4e71cc215364b1f05a48dfeba95/Untitled.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/redirect/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBdGw3IiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--b030a4386d2dc4e71cc215364b1f05a48dfeba95/Untitled.png"></a></div></div></div> <p> </p> <p>In case anyone is curious, here is my process for the capsule model:</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>1) </strong>Grap a sphere and make a blob.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>2)</strong> Make the blob less blobby.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>3)</strong> Use ZSpheres for the building structure.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>4)</strong> ZRemesh or retopologize everything and make it look decent (use creasing and subdivisions and you're good to go). </p> <p> </p> <p>And that’s it for my first brainstorms for the 5G world. See you soon with more 5G cool content! I'm excited to introduce you guys to my very own Agent of Change. In the meantime, I’ll be watching all the new posts as usual <strong><a href="https://emojipedia.org/smiling-face-with-smiling-eyes/">😊</a></strong></p> <p> </p> </div>
