The CG Lead must have in-depth 3D knowledge and the ability to devise and create complex models and effects to an exceptional standard. They must have the ability to innovate, have an exceptional visual aesthetic, demonstrate a true understanding of the subtleties of modeling, the texture of surfaces, the lighting of 3D creations and the ability to seamlessly bed an effect into a scene.
The CG Lead is responsible for leading and managing teams of CG Artists on highly complex visual effects projects training future talent within the CG department. This requires coaching and leading the modeling and visual effects team and training them in methods of modeling, texturing and lighting and the creation of special effects elements e.g. 3D rain, fire and water.
They will lead meetings with clients and attend shoots to advise upon the most effective ways to shoot for high-end special effects. As one of the direct links with the client throughout the project they must possess an in-depth awareness of client requirements and the ability to communicate ideas and guide them through the creative process.
The CG Lead will represent The Mill at international VFX and 3DI conferences and local events, networking with potential clients to procure new business and sourcing and advising potential talent regarding future work opportunities at The Mill.
Responsibilities:
Project Management (40%)
- Work closely with the client to ensure their creative and technical requirements are met and ensure they are guided effectively through the creative process
- Attend re-production meetings and shoots to advise upon the most effective ways to shoot for high-end special effects
- Determine production requirements and advise on budgets
- Work closely with our global offices to encourage intra-office marketing, knowledge sharing, planning and cohesion
People Management (15%)
- Manage and lead CG Artist teams on highly complex 3D visual effects projects and coordinate the visual effects output and quality control
- Coach and lead other Animators/Artists and train them in methods of modelling, texturing, lighting and the creation of special effects elements
Technical (35%)
- Utilize and apply specialized and advanced knowledge of computer graphics software, hardware and advanced techniques to create computer-generated models and special effects to bed seamlessly in to live action scenes
- Utilize Photoshop, Illustrator and other painting tools for texturing
- Utilize CAD data for modelling and either Nuke or After Effects to create rough composites of shots and work in coordination with Flame Artists and Character Animators to ensure photorealistic standards are achieved
- Research new and implement working methodologies
- Work with external agencies to implement creative solutions to interface issues with external and internal techniques and technologies
New Business (10%)
- Work in coordination with Senior CG visual effects Leads and the Heads of CG to grow and develop the business
- Create and maintain client networks to provide new business opportunities
Requirements

Previous experience as a 3D VFX Lead Artist and visual effects supervisor and/or a degree in CG, Media, Maths or Science

Advanced knowledge of 3D packages Maya, Houdini and Unreal along with render systems i.e. Arnold, Mantra

Specific knowledge of techniques such as Photogrammetry, Real-time CG

Linux operating systems knowledge as well as experience of OSX, Windows and IRIX.

Advanced knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator and Nuke/After Effects

A strong understanding of hair dynamics, animation rigging/set-up and 3D character animation

Highly developed knowledge of the software and hardware used in every aspect of the post-production process

Highly developed knowledge of the Visual Effects and associated pipelines

A strong ability to devise, imagine and perform work which is predominantly intellectual in character
