Part 2 - Sculpting and Composition
Hand Pose
After some experimenting with composition, I felt I'd like to expose more of the face and also create some subtle yet interesting gesture with hands. I decided to pursue option B as I like how the hands frame the face and aren't too distracting from the emotion.
Here I split the hand up into segments to help with posing. I decided to block one hand out at first before mirroring and breaking symmetry. A goal for this project is to somewhat emulate the feeling of sculpting traditionally with clay, and giving each hand more attention I feel will create a more precise result.
Once happy with the composition, I wanted to take my sculpt into Marmoset Toolbag 4 as early as possible to experiment with the lighting and presentation as this would feed back into my sculpting focus.
Test Renders
Once again, I experimented again with some alternate compositions of a face emerging from an almost water like surface. This was interesting but it didn't evoke the right emotion. It almost feels like someone trapped like Han Solo frozen in Carbonite, which is not my intention!
Here are a couple of A/B tests for the lighting and composition. I'll continue to push this as I progress, but at the moment I like the contrast and boldness of option A.
