almost Beta
  • Just before colour correction

After very very very long hours of overpainting, here's the *almost* final result. Now what's left to do is some Photoshop magic to get rid of the darkest darks and increase clarity in general.

This was very fun but above all I've learnt so much about workflow - for example, I could have gotten rid of my many layers much much earlier because it's so much easier to overpaint over everything. It also eneded up being the most complex image I've ever made and figuring out what lighting and materials rules to break for composition and clarity sake was an essential part of it. I feel it looks quite convincing overall tho!

  • First round of overpaint

The image is still way too dark but I'm working on it!
I'm also going to revise the composition quite a bit as right now it's full of small shapes but lacking some bigger ones. Adding details without cluttering the image and managing the different value planes is definitely one of the biggest challenges of this illustration, especially given the technical limitations of my monitors and their lack of true blacks.

Very much starting to approach the breaking point cause I've been staring at it for way too long without breaks, but luckily got some encouraging feedback from fresh and trustworthy eyes which made all the difference.

I don't really want to give a definite interpretation because I've already heard a couple very interesting ones from friends, but my idea revolves around being able to use what we can find in the place that's most special to us to take care of the environment and the arts and create a cosy corner no matter where we are. Resilience, resourcefulness and creativity would definitely be part of my personal oasis :)

Going to cram as much fixes and finishing touches where I can in these last 24 hours!

  • 3D blockout

After tinkering quite a bit with composition and lights, I imported my 3D blockout into Photoshop. I didn't use any fancy tools, rendering passes nor compositing, it was just plaing overpainting on a single layer. This didn't make things all that easy but having a base to colour pick from and the clown ID pass sped everything up quite a bit.

At this stage I started having troubles with my computer as I realised a little too late that it was showing me very bright blacks compared to my phone - as a result, the render looks quite dark from most devices (except from my monitor, apparently).

Many correction layers later I started painting all of my characters and creatures on the scene.

  • Brainstorming & earliest explorations

<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>As I started to consider what my oasis might be like, I realised I didn't much care for dreamy landscapes or futuristic cities, nor did I want it to be something completely detached from the world I'm part of. Instead, what I've always admired are people who do good with whatever they have in the place they call home, so I decided that would be the leitmotiv of my entry. Other than that, I knew my keywords would be:<br> - Funky<br> - Cosy<br> - Bittersweet</p> <p> </p> <p><br> Since I didn't think I'd be able to participate in this contest and starting to work on my entry with only one week left 'til the deadline, I'm going to have to make smart choices to make the process as smooth as I can - it's a cool challenge tho! <br> <br> Whilst in my usual workflow I would spend lots of time on thumbnails to explore angles and compositions, because of extreme time restricitons I used them more as a way to help me think rather than help me visualise the scene. For the scene I had in mind, making smart choices meant jumping right into Blender to take full advantage of the wonderful superpowers of 3D to help me out with the composition. </p> <p> </p> <p>Here are the earliest steps of the process :)</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"> <div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBNzcyQVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--ce327cd7750ef800ee848271c292547cdaec0826/image.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBNzcyQVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--ce327cd7750ef800ee848271c292547cdaec0826/image.png"></a></div></div> <br><p> </p> <br><p> I always knew the piano player would be my focal point, so with the thumbnails I was merely trying to think about what perspective would make them and the window behind them most legible. Even if v1 was clear, I wanted a more dynamic composition with multiple levels that would allow me to tell different parts of the story at once, so I briefly refined v3 into v4.</p> <br><p> </p> <br><p> </p> <div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBOEgyQVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--fefa53e8481b9b2c93442f102a46c498a3437e83/image.png"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="/rails/active_storage/blobs/proxy/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBOEgyQVE9PSIsImV4cCI6bnVsbCwicHVyIjoiYmxvYl9pZCJ9fQ==--fefa53e8481b9b2c93442f102a46c498a3437e83/image.png"></a></div></div> <br><p>  And this is what the earliest 3D blockout looked like - most assets are either sourced from Blenderkit / Sketchfab or modelled by me, although it won't matter much in the end since most things will be overpainted. </p> <br><p> </p> <br><p> Later on I will add more elements to the blockout and some very basic materials just to get a better idea of the values given by light and local colours.</p> </div> <p> </p> </div>
